## When to choose Claude Code Use Claude Code when the task is hard enough that model quality dominates tool choice. It is the best terminal agent for reasoning through unfamiliar codebases, debugging subtle issues, and planning multi-file refactors. ## What it does well - **Deep reasoning.** Claude Opus and Sonnet consistently outperform competitors on tasks that require reading many files, tracing execution, or reasoning about edge cases. Claude Code channels that ability directly into your repository. - **Natural-language exploration.** You can ask "why does this service retry three times?" and get a grounded answer with file citations. This makes it the fastest way to onboard to a new codebase. - **Autonomous planning.** Give it a high-level goal and it will break it into steps, edit files, run tests, and report back. The planning loop is more reliable than most competitors. - **Git and IDE integration.** Works in the terminal and as a VS Code extension. You are not forced to switch editors. ## Honest limitations - **Closed ecosystem.** You are tied to Anthropic's models and pricing. There is no BYO-key option. - **Cost can escalate.** Long reasoning sessions over large codebases burn tokens quickly. It is easy to spend $20–$50 in a focused afternoon. - **Not the fastest.** Quality comes at the cost of latency. For trivial edits, Claude Code is overkill. ## Best fit Engineers working on complex codebases — legacy systems, distributed services, or unfamiliar open-source projects — who value correctness over speed and can justify the API spend.
