Microsoft announced general availability in Microsoft Foundry on September 3, availability in Microsoft 365 Copilot on September 4, and general availability in GitHub Copilot the same day.

Astra is OpenAI's newest frontier model, designed less for casual chat and more for long-horizon, multi-step work. Microsoft is positioning it as the model you reach for when you want to delegate a substantial task, not just ask a quick question. That makes it a natural fit for Copilot Studio agents, Foundry-hosted agents, and serious coding sessions in GitHub Copilot.

If you are building or working inside the Microsoft ecosystem, Astra matters because it is available where you already work — not as a separate product you have to wire up. Here is what that actually looks like, and three practical ways to start using it this week.

What Makes Astra Different

Most of us have been using fast, general-purpose models for routine tasks: summarize this, rewrite that, suggest a regex. GPT-6 Astra moves the emphasis from raw speed to deliberate reasoning. It is built to take an open-ended goal, plan steps, validate as it goes, and produce a polished result.

GitHub's changelog adds a developer-specific angle: in internal testing, Astra stood out for how it works, not just what it produces. It plans and validates, batches diagnosis with verification, and independently confirms results before declaring a task done. That translated into stronger performance on long-horizon coding tasks with fewer steps than earlier models.

The practical takeaway: Astra is the model you choose when the task is too big for a single prompt and too important to hand off without review.

Where Astra Shows Up in Microsoft Tools

Astra is being added to three places Microsoft-focused developers and knowledge workers already spend their time:

Because the VS Code Agent Host now owns persistent agent sessions, Astra's long-horizon reasoning becomes more useful.
