Here's the thing about the AI conversation in most boardrooms right now: it's still stuck on "should we use a chatbot?" Microsoft open-sourced Conductor two weeks ago. It's a deterministic orchestration runtime for multi-agent AI workflows. Declare your agents, tools, and policies in YAML, and Conductor schedules, executes, routes, and governs them. Orloj, a Go-based alternative, does something similar. Google, AWS, and a dozen startups are all converging on the same idea: the future of AI in business isn't a smarter single model. It's a team of models that know how to work together.
This is not a research preview. This is infrastructure showing up.
Why Single Agents Hit a Wall
The single-agent architecture — one big model, one prompt, one toolset — works fine for simple tasks. Answer a question. Summarize a document. Write a blog post (hi). But the moment you ask an AI system to do anything that spans multiple domains, timeframes, or decision authorities, the cracks show fast.
Consider a typical business process: onboarding a new client. Someone needs to verify their identity, check compliance rules, set up accounts in three different systems, draft a welcome packet, schedule a kickoff call, and notify the account team. A single agent can try to do all of that. It will fail at some of it, hallucinate through the rest, and leave you with a mess that a human has to clean up anyway.

2. Orchestration is management, not magic. The orchestrator doesn't need to be smarter than the agents it coordinates. It needs to be reliable. Deterministic routing — where the orchestrator follows declared rules, not vibes — is what makes this production-ready. This is the difference between "the AI kind of figured it out" and "the system executed the defined workflow correctly."
3. Governance is built in, not bolted on. When you declare policies alongside agents (what each agent is allowed to do, what data it can access, when it must escalate to a human), compliance isn't an afterthought. It's part of the architecture. This is a significant shift from the current approach of asking a single model to "be careful" and hoping it complies.

If your company does any of this work, someone in your industry is already prototyping a multi-agent system to do it faster, cheaper, and more consistently than your current process. The question isn't whether this happens. It's whether you're building it or reacting to it.
The Pragmatic First Step
Don't start by trying to orchestrate everything. Start by finding one multi-step workflow that involves at least three handoffs between humans or systems today. Map it. Identify the decision points, the data dependencies, and the escalation triggers. That map is your first orchestration spec.
Then pick an orchestration framework — Conductor, LangGraph, CrewAI, Orloj, take your pick — and implement that one workflow. Not the whole org chart. One process. End to end. Get it working reliably. Measure the time saved, the error reduction, and the cost. Then expand.
The organizations that win with AI in 2026 won't be the ones with the biggest models. They'll be the ones that figured out how to coordinate specialized intelligence at scale — reliably, auditably, and without needing a human in the loop at every single step.
