A fen canal · the last hour of light

Merrow Cut

The Cut was dug through the Merrow fen in 1841, so the peat barges could reach the river before the frost. Nine lamps were set along its reed islands, and a keeper rowed out to them every evening.

The barges stopped long ago. Someone still rows.

Gather the wick-light that drifts up out of the reeds and carry it to the lamps. Keep all nine burning at once before night closes over the water. Fog drinks the flame.
