WHERE LIGHT ENDS
A FIELD GUIDE TO THE DEEP · VOL. I

Where light ends.

Six thousand metres of falling, drawn live in this tab. You are the submersible. The light you carry is the only lamp on board.

EPIPELAGIC — THE SUNLIGHT ZONE

The sun's last metre

Light arrives at the ocean the way money arrives at a bad bank — most of it is kept at the door. The reds are spent first, then the oranges, then the greens; by two hundred metres only a cold blue remains, and soon not even that. Below this line the sun is a rumour the water keeps telling.

MESOPELAGIC — THE TWILIGHT ZONE

The largest migration on Earth

Every evening, billions of animals rise from here toward the surface to feed under cover of dark, and every dawn they sink back down before the light can find them. It is called diel vertical migration — the largest movement of life on this planet, performed nightly, at planetary scale, and almost no one has ever seen it. The fish passing your window now are on their way up.

700 MTHE LAST OF THE BLUE

A sperm whale, passing on its own descent. It will hunt squid two kilometres down, and come back up on the single breath it is holding now.

BATHYPELAGIC — THE MIDNIGHT ZONE

Light is not given here. It is made.

Nine of every ten creatures down here can produce their own light, and it is always blue — the one colour water cannot swallow. Some flash to hunt, some to mate, some to vanish: one burst, and gone. Nothing you see from here on is reflected light. They are announcements, warnings, and love letters, written in the only ink that works.

1600 MABSOLUTE MIDNIGHT

THE COLONY

This is not one animal.

The siphonophore is thousands of bodies, each born for a single job — catching, digesting, steering, glowing — strung into a rope that can run longer than a blue whale. No brain, no heart, no face. It has not needed them for five hundred million years, which is longer than anything with a spine has been keeping records.

3000 MTHE SNOW IS MADE OF THE DEAD

ABYSSOPELAGIC — THE ABYSS

MOVE YOUR LIGHT ACROSS THE WORDS

There is no light here but yours.

Four kilometres of black water in every direction, and the pressure of a small car standing on every stamp-sized patch of your skin. Nothing here has ever seen the sun. Nothing is waiting for it. What you illuminate, you invent: at this depth the ocean is exactly as large as your lamp, and not one metre more.

Something has been following your light.
It is patient.

5000 MTHE PLAIN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD

HADALPELAGIC — THE TRENCH

The dark was never empty.

Six thousand metres, and the water column above you weighs more than a freight train. And still: pale shrimp work the mud, translucent fish patrol the cold, and whole gardens of bacteria farm the planet's own heat through cracks in the floor. Life does not merely tolerate the deep. Life prefers it — it was here first, and it will still be here long after every lamp, including yours, has gone home.
