Heavy Seas

Heavy seas all day. The wind howled like a living thing. I kept the lamp burning through the night. A schooner passed close to the rocks — I saw her sails in the beam, white as bone.

November 3rd, 1893

Calm Water

Calm after the storm. The sea is glass. I spent the morning repairing the lantern lens. My hands smell of brass and oil. A single gull sat on the railing for an hour, watching me work.

November 5th, 1893

Thick Fog

Fog thick as wool. The bell tolled all night. I could hear it echoing off the water, but saw nothing. Somewhere out there, a ship was waiting. I hope they heard us.
