The problem
Building a working agent prototype is now easy. Running that agent in production — with durable execution, approval gates, observability, multi-agent coordination, and the ability to survive crashes and deployments — is still hard. The orchestration layer is where most prototypes stall.
August 2026 brought a wave of new options. This guide compares five platforms that approach the problem from different angles, and helps you choose based on your stack, constraints, and how much control you want to give up.
The five options
1. Temporal Agent Harness
What: An open-source outer harness that wraps your existing agent SDK (OpenAI Agents SDK, PydanticAI, Gemini) with Temporal's durable execution model. Every agent becomes a Temporal Workflow.
Best for: Teams that already use Temporal or need maximum control over execution semantics. The harness gives you durable execution, approval policies, typed operations, and structured event streams — but you operate the infrastructure.
- Maturity: Very early (pre-public-preview). APIs will change.
- Cost: Free (Apache 2.0). Temporal Cloud available for managed execution.
- Control: Maximum. You own the execution model, the policies, the infrastructure.
- Effort: High. You're adopting Temporal's paradigm alongside your agent stack.
2. DigitalOcean M.A.R.S.
What: A fully managed runtime for coding agents and agentic workflows. Harness Runtime provides Firecracker microVMs with 200ms session resume. Action Gateway provides governed tool access with centralized auth.
Best for: Teams that want managed infrastructure and don't need to own the execution layer. Works with Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, LangGraph, CrewAI.
- Maturity: Private Preview (invite-only).
- Cost: TBD.
- Control: Low. DigitalOcean manages execution, persistence, isolation, scaling.
- Effort: Low. Define an environment template and deploy.
3. LangChain Managed Deep Agents
What: A managed runtime for LangChain's open-source Deep Agents harness. Deploy with mda deploy. Handles persistence, memory, sandboxes, channels (Slack), schedules, evals, and traces via LangSmith.
Best for: Teams already in the LangChain/LangSmith ecosystem who want a code-first agent with managed production scaffolding.
- Maturity: Public beta.
- Cost: LangSmith pricing (US region only during beta).
- Control: Medium. You own the agent logic; LangSmith owns the runtime.
- Effort: Medium. Author the agent, deploy with one command.
4. UiPath Maestro Flow
What: A developer-first orchestration canvas for coding agents. Use Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Codex to design, run, observe, and govern end-to-end business processes as a single artifact.
Best for: Enterprise teams that already use UiPath or need to coordinate agents, robots, APIs, documents, and people within governed business processes.
- Maturity: GA (announced August 19, 2026).
- Cost: Enterprise pricing. Maestro Lite available for lighter processes.
- Control: Medium. UiPath provides the orchestration engine; you define flows in your IDE.
- Effort: Medium. Code-first build experience, but enterprise governance layer adds complexity.
5. Trinity (Ability.ai)
What: An open-source platform for running agents 24/7 with cron scheduling, multi-agent delegation, fleet observability, and 116 MCP tools. Each agent runs in its own Docker container.
Best for: Self-hosting teams that want a complete agent operations platform — scheduling, monitoring, delegation, credentials — without a managed service.
- Maturity: Production (Apache 2.0).
- Cost: Free self-hosted.
- Control: High. You own the platform and the infrastructure.
- Effort: Medium-High. Docker-based deployment, but you manage the platform.

Question 1: Do you need to own the execution model?
- Yes → Temporal Agent Harness (maximum control) or Trinity (self-hosted platform)
- No → DigitalOcean M.A.R.S. (fully managed) or LangChain Managed Deep Agents (managed with code-first control)

The honest take
No single platform dominates all scenarios. The right choice depends on three factors: how much infrastructure you want to own, what ecosystem you're already in, and whether your agents are coding-focused, process-oriented, or general-purpose.
If you're starting fresh with no existing investment: try LangChain Managed Deep Agents (public beta, lowest barrier) or Trinity (self-hosted, no vendor lock-in). Both let you get agents running in production within a day.
If you're in an enterprise with governance requirements: UiPath Maestro Flow is the most mature for governed business process orchestration.
If you need maximum control and are willing to invest in a paradigm: Temporal Agent Harness offers the most sophisticated execution model, but it is early and requires Temporal expertise.
What to avoid
- Don't choose based on features alone — a platform with more features that you can't operate is worse than a simpler one that runs reliably
- Don't skip the durability question — if your agent needs to survive crashes, deployments, or multi-day waits, the execution model matters more than any other feature
- Don't assume "managed" means "no ops" — you still need to monitor, debug, and tune agent behavior regardless of who manages the infrastructure
