Search for "best AI agent" and you get 50 tools, 20 opinionated Reddit threads, and zero guidance on which one is right for you. This guide fixes that.
You will answer 4 questions. Each answer eliminates options. At the end, you have 1–3 agents to try. No research rabbit holes. No feature comparison spreadsheets. Just a clear path from "I want an AI agent" to "I am using one."

- Audit requirements: Do you need logs of every action? (Aider with git > Cursor)
- Cost at scale: Per-seat or usage-based? (Ollama + Cline vs. Cursor Pro)

First-week checklist
Once you have picked an agent, do these in your first week:

- Day 4: Try a task that is slightly too hard (learn the failure mode)
- Day 5: Document one tip or workaround in your team's wiki

Common first-week mistakes
Mistake: Expecting magic. Agents are not senior developers. They are interns who work at infinite speed but make mistakes. Review everything.
