The problem
Most AI agent interfaces are a single text stream — the same chatbox metaphor that worked for Q&A bots but fails for agents that take actions, manage state, and make decisions with real consequences. The chatbox hides reasoning, obscures confidence, buries state, and offers no natural place for a human to approve a consequential action.
Wavespace's Beyond the Chatbox framework (September 2026) argues that by the end of 2026, about 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents (up from <5% in 2025), making agent UX a mainstream design concern rather than a niche one.
The framework's five principles
1. Visible agent reasoning
Don't make the agent a black box. Surface what the agent is doing and why — the steps it considered, the sources it used, the confidence it has in the current step. Reasoning should be inspectable, not buried.
Practice: show a collapsible trace of the agent's plan and the tools it called, with the evidence each step relied on. Users who can see the work can catch errors early.
2. Clear state management
Agents manage state — pending tasks, in-progress work, completed steps, held data. A chat stream loses all of this. Use explicit state UI: a task list, a pipeline view, or a kanban-style board that reflects where the agent is in its workflow.
Practice: make agent state a first-class UI element, not an implicit property of the conversation history.
3. Explicit trust cues
Users need to know how much to trust a given agent output. Show confidence, show sources, show whether the output was verified or is a best guess. Trust cues let users calibrate their review effort.
Practice: annotate outputs with source links, confidence indicators, and verification status. Avoid presenting unverified agent output with the same visual weight as confirmed data.
4. Human approval checkpoints
For consequential actions (sending a message, making a payment, modifying a production system, publishing content), insert an explicit approval step before the agent acts. The UI should present the proposed action clearly and require a human decision.
Practice: treat approval checkpoints as a UI primitive, not an afterthought. The agent proposes; the human disposes. Make the proposed action, its scope, and its reversibility visible at the checkpoint.
5. Task-specific interfaces
Replace generic chat replies with the interface that fits the task: a form for data entry, a table for comparison, a calendar for scheduling, a diff view for code review, a map for location-based work. The chatbox is the fallback, not the default.
Practice: when designing an agent workflow, first ask "what is the natural UI for this task?" and build that. Use chat only for the free-form conversational parts that have no better representation.
How to apply it
- Audit your existing AI features for how well they expose reasoning, state, and approval checkpoints. Most chat-based agent UIs score poorly on all three.
- Prototype one workflow using generative UI (task-specific interface + visible reasoning + approval checkpoint) and compare task completion rates and user trust scores against your current chat interface.
- Start with the highest-stakes workflow — the one where a wrong agent action is most expensive. That is where approval checkpoints and trust cues pay back fastest.
Why this matters for agent builders
The agent itself is only half the product. An agent that reasons well but is presented through an opaque chatbox will be mistrusted, over-reviewed, or ignored. An agent that reasons moderately well but is presented through a task-specific interface with visible reasoning and clear approval checkpoints will be trusted, used, and improved over time. Interface design is a leverage multiplier on agent capability.
Limitations of the framework
- More engineering: generative UI is more work than a chat stream — each task type needs its own interface
- Framework is prescriptive, not measured: the 40% enterprise-adoption forecast is directional; validate against your own market
- Not every task needs a rich UI: for simple, low-stakes, single-turn interactions, a chatbox is fine. Don't over-engineer the trivial case.
