After 90 days of daily use across content ops, social media, and research workflows, here is where Hermes Agent shines and where it still needs work.

We have been running Hermes Agent as a daily driver for SMF Works operations for approximately 90 days. The use cases span:
- Content operations: Weekly clearinghouse content updates (this very workflow), blog drafting, and cross-platform social posting via Postiz
- Research: ArXiv paper curation, competitive intelligence tracking, and synthesis of AI ecosystem developments
- Infrastructure: Cron-scheduled jobs for content audits, deployment verification, and cost monitoring
- Social media: Multi-account X posting, draft review workflows, and social guardrails enforcement
The deployment runs on a Linux server with a mix of Nous Portal and bring-your-own-key provider configurations. We use the CLI and cron extensively, with the Desktop GUI for interactive work.
Skill learning is the killer feature. After completing a complex task, Hermes saves a reusable skill. This is not a gimmick — it compounds. Tasks that took 40 minutes the first time take 5 minutes the tenth time because the skill encodes the workflow, the tools, and the gotchas. After 90 days, we have a library of 50+ custom skills that make our team faster than any individual human could be.
Provider agnosticism is real. We have switched between Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and Anthropic providers multiple times without rewriting any skills or workflows. The model is a config setting, not an architecture decision. This matters more than people realize — when a provider has an outage or a price change, we route around it in minutes.
Cron scheduling is genuinely useful. Natural-language cron (hermes cron add "every Wednesday at 4:30am") is how this very content update runs. The scheduler has access to skills and memory, which means scheduled jobs are not dumb scripts — they are agent workflows that can adapt, reason, and self-correct.
Messaging gateways work. Telegram, Discord, and Slack integrations are reliable enough for production use. We route agent notifications through Telegram and have not had a significant outage in 90 days.
Memory across sessions. Hermes remembers preferences, past decisions, and context across sessions. This is subtle but important — the agent gets better the more you use it because it accumulates institutional knowledge.
Skill quality varies. Not every saved skill is good. Some encode bad patterns or outdated assumptions. We periodically audit and prune skills that produce poor results. The system does not yet have a reliable way to flag or deprecate stale skills automatically.
Context management requires discipline. Hermes does not automatically budget its context window. On long multi-step tasks, it can accumulate tool outputs and conversation history until performance degrades. We have learned to structure tasks with explicit scope boundaries and to use the context budgeting approach (see our tip on this).
Desktop GUI is still maturing. The CLI is rock-solid. The Desktop GUI is improving but still has rough edges — occasional state sync issues, and the skills hub browser could be better organized. We do most of our work in the CLI and treat the GUI as a convenience layer.
Multi-agent coordination is manual. Running multiple Hermes instances (for different personas or workflows) works, but coordination between them is hand-rolled. There is no built-in "swarm" protocol. We use shared filesystems and a shared Git repo for cross-agent state, which works but is not elegant.
Cost can creep up. With multiple providers, cron jobs, and interactive sessions, monthly API spend adds up. The per-task cost logging tip on this site came directly from our experience with Hermes cost creep. You need to monitor this actively.
Hermes Agent is best for technically inclined users who want a personal agent that improves over time and are willing to invest in skill development. If you are looking for a turnkey, zero-config assistant, this is not it — Hermes rewards users who shape it.
Teams with repetitive workflows (content, ops, research, DevOps) will see the most value. The skill system turns repeated work into reusable automation in a way that no other agent we have tested matches.
Solo developers and researchers who want an agent that remembers their preferences and workflow patterns will find Hermes uniquely valuable. The memory + skills combination creates something that feels like a real colleague over time, not a fresh chatbot every session.
Hermes Agent earns a 4.3 after 90 days of real production use. It loses points for GUI maturity, manual context management, and the lack of built-in multi-agent coordination. It gains points for the skill system (which is genuinely differentiated), provider agnosticism, reliable cron scheduling, and the fact that it gets measurably better with use.
We have evaluated Claude Code, Aider, Cline, and custom LangChain setups. None of them match Hermes on the "gets better over time" axis. For SMF Works, Hermes is the operational backbone of our content and research pipeline. It is not perfect, but it is the best open-source agent platform we have used, and the gap is widening as the skill ecosystem grows.
