Mastra Framework Review

After six weeks of building TypeScript agents with Mastra for content workflows and API orchestration, here is where it delivers and where it falls short.

What we tested

We have been using Mastra for approximately six weeks across two workflows:

  • Content pipeline orchestration: A multi-step workflow that researches topics, drafts content, runs quality checks, and publishes to the Clearinghouse. The workflow uses suspend/resume for human review between drafting and publishing.
  • API orchestration: Agents that call multiple external APIs (search, extraction, analysis) and return structured results. This workflow uses tool approval gates for sensitive API calls.

The deployment runs against OpenAI (GPT-5.5), Anthropic (Claude 4 Sonnet), and local models via Ollama. We use Mastra Studio for development and testing.

What it does well

Workflows are the standout feature. The type-safe workflow system with suspend/resume, conditional branching, and snapshot-based replay is the best implementation we have used in TypeScript. The fact that any step can suspend, hand to a human, and resume — with state persisted automatically — solves a real production problem. We tested suspending a workflow on Friday and resuming it on Monday. It worked.

Mastra Studio is a genuine differentiator. Being able to run agents, trace execution, edit prompts, and create eval datasets in a visual UI — and hand that UI to a non-technical team member — is something no other TypeScript agent framework offers at this quality level. Our content editor refined prompts and annotated traces without writing code. That alone justifies the framework choice.

Type safety is real end-to-end. Tools, workflows, and agent outputs are all typed. Compile-time errors catch workflow logic mistakes that would only surface at runtime in Python frameworks. For a TypeScript team, this is the same value proposition as Pydantic AI for Python teams.

Tool approval gates are built in. Requiring human approval before sensitive tool calls is a first-class feature, not something you bolt on. This matters for production agents that touch real systems.

Observational Memory works. The memory system learns across sessions and provides context-aware recall. It is not just message persistence — it actually builds a picture of user context over time. This reduced our manual context engineering significantly.

Model-agnostic with a real unified router. We switched between GPT-5.5, Claude 4 Sonnet, and local Ollama models. The switch is a model configuration change, not a code rewrite. The 1000+ model router is not marketing — it works across providers cleanly.

Honest limitations

TypeScript-only is a real constraint. Our Python tooling (Pydantic AI agents, research scripts) cannot share code with Mastra agents. If your stack is polyglot, Mastra only covers the TS side. You will maintain two agent ecosystems.

Enterprise pricing is opaque. The framework is free (Apache 2.0). But RBAC, SSO, and enterprise observability are behind a "contact sales" wall. For teams evaluating total cost of ownership, the inability to self-serve enterprise pricing is friction. We still do not have a number.

Younger ecosystem than LangChain. Fewer community integrations, fewer tutorials, fewer Stack Overflow answers. We hit an edge case with the workflow snapshot system and ended up reading source code. With LangChain, someone had already asked on Stack Overflow. With Mastra, we were the first.

No built-in code execution. If your agents need to write and run code (like smolagents), Mastra does not provide this. You integrate an external sandbox. This is a gap for teams building coding agents.

Studio is development-only. Mastra Studio is excellent for dev and testing. But it is not a production monitoring dashboard. For production alerting, long-term trace retention, and cost dashboards at scale, you still need an external observability platform. We integrated with Langfuse for production monitoring.

Documentation has gaps at the edges. Core concepts (agents, workflows, tools) are well-documented. Advanced patterns (supervisor agent composition, custom memory backends, eval pipeline integration) require reading source. The docs are improving fast but are not yet comprehensive.

Who it's for

Mastra is the right choice for TypeScript teams who:

  • Need multi-step workflows with human-in-the-loop, not just single-call agents
  • Want a visual development studio for non-technical collaborators
  • Value type safety from tool definition through workflow output
  • Are building production agent systems, not prototypes
  • Want a single framework instead of stitching together five libraries

It is the wrong choice for teams who:

  • Are Python-first (use Pydantic AI or CrewAI)
  • Need built-in code execution (use smolagents)
  • Need the largest community ecosystem (use LangChain)
  • Want a visual no-code builder (use n8n or Flowise)
Verdict

Mastra earns a 4.0 after six weeks of production use. It gains points for the best TypeScript workflow system we have used, Mastra Studio as a genuine differentiator, real end-to-end type safety, built-in tool approval gates, and Observational Memory. It loses points for the TypeScript-only constraint, opaque enterprise pricing, a younger ecosystem, no built-in code execution, and Studio being development-only rather than a full production observability solution.

For TypeScript teams building production agents with workflows, Mastra is our recommended default. The workflow system alone — type-safe, suspend/resume, replay — is worth the choice. Everything else is a bonus. The ecosystem will grow; the core is already solid.
