Pydantic AI Review
After four months of building type-safe agents with Pydantic AI for research and content workflows, here is where it delivers on its promises and where the cracks show.

We have been using Pydantic AI for approximately four months across three workflows:
- Research agents: Building agents that search the web, extract content, and return structured research summaries with verified citations
- Content pipelines: Agents that draft, review, and format content with type-safe output schemas that downstream systems consume directly
- Internal tooling: Agents that interact with databases and APIs where output structure must be exact — no flexibility in the returned data shape
The deployment runs against multiple model providers: OpenAI (GPT-5.5), Anthropic (Claude 4 Sonnet), Zhipu (GLM-5.2), and local models via Ollama. We use Pydantic Logfire for observability and have tested the eval framework for regression testing.
Type safety is real, not marketing. Every agent's output is a Pydantic model. If the LLM returns malformed data, you get a validation error at the boundary, not a silent downstream failure. This is the framework's core promise and it delivers. When you define an agent that returns a ResearchSummary with title: str, sources: list[Source], and confidence: float, that is what you get — or a clear validation error explaining what went wrong. After four months, we have zero cases of a downstream consumer receiving unexpected data shapes from a Pydantic AI agent.
Model-agnostic is genuinely model-agnostic. We switched between GPT-5.5, Claude 4 Sonnet, GLM-5.2, and local Ollama models. The switch is a model class change, not a rewrite. The agent definition, tools, and output schemas stay the same. This is the best multi-provider experience we have used — cleaner than LiteLLM alone because the type safety layer stays consistent across providers.
Pydantic Logfire integration is seamless. Observability is the area where most agent frameworks require you to wire things up manually. Pydantic AI ships with Logfire integration that traces every LLM call, tool execution, and validation step automatically. If you have used Langfuse or Helicone, Logfire is in the same category — the advantage is that it is native to the framework, not an adapter layer.
Capability-based composition is clean. The newer capabilities system (web search, thinking, MCP) lets you compose agents from reusable units. This is better than the earlier version where you had to wire everything manually. The built-in MCP integration works with any MCP server, and the web search capability is well-implemented.
The FastAPI feeling is real. If you have used FastAPI, Pydantic AI feels familiar. Type hints drive behavior. Dependencies are injected. Documentation is generated from your code. This is the most ergonomic agent framework for Python developers who already live in the Pydantic/FastAPI ecosystem.
Eval framework is practical. The built-in evaluation system lets you define test cases, run them, and track results over time. It is not as feature-rich as a dedicated eval platform, but for a framework-native tool, it is solid. We use it for regression testing before model upgrades.
The adapter lag is real. When you use Pydantic AI with Claude or other models, you go through the framework's adapter. The adapter covers core features well, but cutting-edge capabilities — extended thinking, fine-grained cache breakpoints, new model versions on release day — often lag the official SDK. If a provider releases a new feature, the official SDK has it first. Pydantic AI gets it when the adapter is updated. This is usually days to weeks, but it matters when you need something on day one.
You build more yourself. Pydantic AI is deliberately thin. It gives you the primitives — agents, tools, models, type-safe outputs — and expects you to compose them. There is no built-in multi-agent orchestration, no role-based agent teams, no visual workflow builder. If you need those patterns, you build them. This is a feature for teams who want control and a limitation for teams who want batteries-included.
Younger ecosystem than LangChain. Fewer third-party integrations, fewer community examples, fewer Stack Overflow answers. The Pydantic team is responsive and the documentation is good, but the ecosystem is still growing. When you hit an edge case, you are more likely to read source code than find a blog post.
Logfire pricing can surprise you. Pydantic AI is free and MIT-licensed. Pydantic Logfire (the observability platform) has a free tier, then $2 per million spans/metrics. For high-volume agents, this adds up. We hit $200/month on Logfire before optimizing our span emission. The framework works without Logfire, but you lose the seamless observability story.
No built-in multi-agent orchestration. If you need agents that talk to each other, delegate tasks, or form a team, Pydantic AI does not provide this natively. You can build it — the type-safe primitives make it straightforward — but it is your code, not framework magic. CrewAI and AutoGen provide this out of the box.
YAML/JSON agent spec is promising but new. The agent-spec feature (define agents in YAML/JSON without code) is interesting but still maturing. For complex agents with custom tools, you will still write Python. The YAML path works for simpler configurations but is not yet a complete replacement for code-based agent definitions.
Pydantic AI is the right choice for Python developers who:
- Already use Pydantic and FastAPI and want the same ergonomics for agents
- Need type-safe, validated outputs that downstream systems can trust
- Want model-agnostic agents they can run against any provider
- Prefer explicit code over framework magic
- Are building single-agent or lightly-composed agent systems, not complex multi-agent teams
It is the wrong choice for teams who need:
- Built-in multi-agent orchestration (use CrewAI or AutoGen)
- A visual workflow builder (use n8n or Flowise)
- The largest ecosystem of pre-built integrations (use LangChain)
- Code execution as a first-class action pattern (use smolagents)
Pydantic AI earns a 4.1 after four months of production use. It gains points for genuine type safety, the best multi-provider model-agnostic experience we have used, seamless Logfire observability, and the FastAPI-feeling developer experience. It loses points for adapter lag on cutting-edge model features, the thinner ecosystem compared to LangChain, Logfire pricing that requires attention, and the absence of built-in multi-agent orchestration.
For teams building production agents in Python who value type safety and want a thin, honest framework — Pydantic AI is our recommended default. For teams who need heavy orchestration or a large integration catalog, look elsewhere. The right comparison is not "is Pydantic AI better than LangChain" — it is "do you want a framework that gets out of your way or one that does the work for you?" Pydantic AI is for the former.
