OpenRouter: Unified API for 100+ LLMs

One API key, one endpoint, 100+ models. OpenRouter handles routing, fallbacks, and model availability so your agent never stops because a provider is down.

What it is

OpenRouter is an API gateway for large language models. It exposes a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint and routes requests to more than 100 models across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, DeepSeek, Alibaba, Mistral, and many smaller providers. It adds model routing, automatic fallbacks, and competitive pay-per-token pricing.

When to use it
  • You want one API key instead of managing keys for every provider.
  • Your agent needs automatic fallback when a model or provider is rate-limited.
  • You want to compare models without rewriting integrations.
  • You need a routing layer between your agent and multiple backend LLMs.
  • You are building multi-tenant agents where different users need different models.
What it does well
  • Massive model catalog. Access Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, and dozens more from one account.
  • Automatic fallbacks. Configure a primary model and a fallback so outages do not kill your agent.
  • Provider-agnostic routing. Switch models by changing the model ID; the request shape stays the same.
  • No subscription. Pay only for tokens used, with transparent per-model pricing.
  • OpenAI-compatible SDKs. Drop-in replacement for openai.ChatCompletion calls.
  • Leaderboard and latency data. OpenRouter surfaces real model performance and pricing data to help you choose.
Honest limitations
  • Provider in the middle. You are adding a third party between your agent and the model provider.
  • Latency can increase. Extra routing hop adds overhead, especially for streaming.
  • Feature lag. New provider features may not be exposed immediately through the gateway.
  • Rate limits differ. Each backend provider still has its own rate limits, even if OpenRouter smooths them.
  • No free tier. You pay for every token; there is no permanent free allocation.
Pricing reality
  • No monthly minimum or subscription.
  • Per-token prices are often close to provider-direct pricing, sometimes slightly marked up.
  • Some models are offered at steep discounts during promotional windows.
  • Heavy production workloads should compare total cost including routing latency and reliability gains.
Best fit

Agents that need provider diversity, failover, or rapid model experimentation. It is especially useful for self-hosted agent frameworks that want to route to the cheapest or fastest available model without hard-coding provider SDKs.

Common integrations
  • OpenClaw / Hermes agent gateways using OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
  • LiteLLM as a secondary abstraction layer.
  • LangChain / LlamaIndex via the OpenAI adapter.
  • Fallback policies written against HTTP status codes and latency thresholds.
