If an agent solves a task well once, turn that prompt into a reusable template instead of reinventing it every run.
The reinvention trap
Teams often rewrite the same prompt patterns: summarize this, extract that, classify this, rewrite this. Each rewrite drifts slightly from the last. Over time the agent becomes inconsistent and expensive to maintain.
What to cache
- Prompts that solve recurring tasks correctly.
- Few-shot examples that reliably improve quality.
- Output schemas that the model follows well.
- System prompts that set the right tone for a workflow.
How to organize them
- Store prompts as versioned files, not strings in code.
- Group by task type: extraction, summarization, classification, generation.
- Include the input context, the exact prompt, and the expected output schema.
- Review quarterly; retire prompts that no longer match your workflow.
