Key design decisions

  • Scope. Limit the agent to specific doc sets rather than the whole wiki.
  • Source of truth. The code is the source of truth; docs should be derived or cross-checked against it.
  • Human review. Never publish generated docs without review. Agents hallucinate APIs and outdated steps.
  • Templates. Give the agent templates for changelogs, API docs, and README sections.
  • Triggering. Run the agent on PR merge, release cut, or scheduled cadence.

Honest limitations

  • Agents may generate plausible but incorrect examples.
  • They can miss nuance about why a feature exists.
  • They do not understand your users' mental model.
  • Bad source code comments produce bad generated docs.

Getting started

  1. Pick a single doc that drifts frequently, like an API reference or README.
  2. Use Claude Code or Aider to generate an updated version from the current code.
  3. Review and edit manually.
  4. Add the command to your CI or release script.
  5. Iterate on prompts and templates based on what the agent misses.
