Cursor

Anysphere · 2023

FreemiumHybridMulti-platform

AI-first code editor built on VS Code. Best for developers who want an integrated, polished agent experience and are willing to pay for convenience.

When to choose cursor

Use Cursor when you want the most polished, all-in-one AI coding environment and are willing to trade some flexibility for a seamless user experience. It is the closest thing to a fully AI-native IDE.

What it does well
  • Tight integration. Tab predictions, inline chat, multi-file Composer, and context-aware search are built into the same surface. Nothing feels bolted on.
  • Multi-file Composer. Cursor's strongest feature is asking for a change that spans many files and watching the editor propose a coherent diff across the whole project.
  • Fast predictions. Tab completion is genuinely useful for boilerplate and repetitive code. It saves keystrokes in a way that feels native.
  • VS Code compatibility. Import your settings, keybindings, and extensions. The migration cost is low.
Honest limitations
  • Proprietary and centrally controlled. You depend on Cursor's infrastructure, model routing, and pricing. Your code is processed by their systems.
  • Model switching is limited. You get the models Cursor decides to offer. There is no deep BYO-key or local-model path.
  • Can be expensive at scale. The Pro tier adds up fast for teams, and usage caps can interrupt flow.
Best fit

Individual developers and small teams who want the most productive out-of-the-box AI editor and do not need to self-host or fine-tune models.
