Choose Windsurf when you want an IDE where autonomous agents and manual coding share the same surface. Its Cascade feature lets you delegate a task, then step back in to edit the result inline without switching tools.

What it does well

Cascade workflows. This is the standout feature: describe a goal, and the agent plans, edits, runs commands, and reports back — all inside the editor.

Fast predictions. Inline code completion is responsive and useful for repetitive boilerplate.

Honest limitations

Proprietary routing. You depend on Codeium's infrastructure for the best experience. Model choice exists but is not as deep as Cline or Aider.
Can feel busy. The combination of agent panels, predictions, and chat can be overwhelming until you develop a rhythm.
Team features are thinner. It is strongest as a solo IDE; team workflows lag behind Cursor and GitHub Copilot.
