When to choose devin
Choose Devin when you have a substantial software task and want to hand it to an autonomous engineer rather than pair with an assistant. It is built for projects, not prompts: write a spec, get a PR.
What it does well
- Autonomous execution. Devin can plan a multi-hour task, implement it, debug failures, and open a pull request with minimal interruption.
- Sandboxed workspace. It works inside its own cloud environment with browser, terminal, and file system, so it can verify its own code.
- Research and integration. It can read documentation, investigate APIs, and wire up unfamiliar services as part of a task.

Honest limitations
- Expensive and limited access. Devin is not a cheap or universally available tool. Pricing and availability favor teams with real budgets.
- Overshoots and under-communicates. Because it works autonomously, it can spend time on a direction you would not have chosen. Close supervision helps.
- Closed to Cognition models. There is no BYO-model option. You use the model stack Cognition provides.
- Not for real-time iteration. If you want to rapidly refine line-by-line, a chat agent or IDE tool is faster.
