Hermes Agent

Nous Research · 2025

Open SourceHybridMulti-platformProvider-agnostic

Self-improving autonomous agent from Nous Research that learns reusable skills, keeps persistent memory, and runs across 20+ providers and messaging platforms.

When to choose hermes agent

Choose Hermes Agent when you want an open-source agent that gets better the longer you use it. It is built around two ideas: skills compound, and memory persists. That makes it unusually good for recurring workflows — daily reports, code reviews, monitoring, or social posting — rather than one-off questions.

What it does well
  • Skills that improve. Hermes can discover, save, and refine reusable skill files. A task you do twice becomes faster the third time.
  • Cross-session memory. It remembers context between conversations, so you are not starting from zero every chat.
  • Provider freedom. Works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, local Ollama, and many more through a unified provider interface.
  • Messaging-first UX. Run the same agent inside Telegram, Discord, Slack, or your email inbox. It meets you where you already communicate.
  • Scheduling and webhooks. Cron support plus HTTP triggers means it can act as background automation, not just a chat responder.
  • MCP extensibility. Model Context Protocol servers let it talk to databases, codebases, and external APIs without custom integrations.
Honest limitations
  • Learning curve. Configuring providers, memory backends, channels, and cron jobs takes more effort than installing a single IDE plugin.
  • Documentation is sparse in places. Nous Research moves fast; some advanced features require reading source or Discord threads.
  • Not IDE-native. While it can work in editors through integrations, its home is the terminal and messaging apps. Pure IDE users may prefer Cline or Cursor.
Best fit

Engineers and automation builders who want a long-running, provider-agnostic agent that learns from repetition. Ideal if you already manage API keys and enjoy tuning a system over time.
