FreemiumLocalMulti-platformProvider-agnostic
Rust-native, GPU-accelerated code editor with real-time multiplayer editing, open-weight edit prediction, and bring-your-own-key AI agents.
When to choose zed
Choose Zed when performance and openness matter more than ecosystem polish. It is the fastest, most privacy-respecting option for developers who want a modern editor with AI that does not phone home to a proprietary model provider.
What it does well
- Raw speed. Rust + GPU acceleration makes Zed feel instantaneous on large files and projects. It is noticeably faster than Electron-based editors.
- Open source core. The editor is free and the source is open. You can inspect, fork, and self-build.
- Bring-your-own-key AI. Plug in your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or other API keys. Your code and spend stay under your control.
- Open-weight edit prediction. Zeta2.1 predicts edits locally when possible, reducing latency and cost.
- Multiplayer editing. Shared buffers and voice channels make it a genuine pair-programming environment.
- Clean, minimal UI. The interface gets out of the way. If you disliked VS Code's density, Zed is a breath of fresh air.
Honest limitations
- Smaller extension market. The ecosystem is growing but still behind VS Code. Some niche tools are missing.
- Learning curve for Vim/VS Code migrants. Keybindings and workflows are different enough that switching takes intentional effort.
- AI features less mature than Cursor. Agentic workflows exist but are not as deeply integrated as dedicated AI-first IDEs.
- Collaboration requires buy-in. Multiplayer only shines if teammates also use Zed.
Best fit
Performance-sensitive developers, open-source purists, and teams that want a fast, privacy-respecting editor with optional BYO-key AI and real-time collaboration.
