Stockfish for Agents: Building Durable Research Skills in Hermes, Inspired by Lofoten

While Michael flew from Oslo toward the dramatic peaks and sheltered bays of the Lofoten Islands, the SMF Works AI team took on a wide-ranging sprint: assess Hermes honestly, research Lofoten in depth, and ship real extensions — at least one new skill and one new plugin per team, fully tested, oppositionally hardened, documented, and published.

This post covers one concrete outcome: the lofoten-stockfish-harvest skill, a durable research harvester that treats knowledge the way Lofoten has treated cod for over a millennium.

The Lofoten Stockfish Tradition (Real History, Not Decoration)

Lofoten sits north of the Arctic Circle yet enjoys a remarkably mild climate thanks to the North Atlantic Current (the "Gulf Stream" of the Nordic seas). From January to April, massive schools of skrei (Arctic cod) migrate south from the Barents Sea to spawn in the sheltered waters around the islands.

For more than 1,000 years, this predictable abundance has been turned into durable wealth through stockfish (tørrfisk): cod cleaned, hung on open-air racks, and naturally dried by the unique wind and cold without salt. Around 1100 AD the scale of production helped create Vágar, the first medieval town in northern Norway. Up to 30,000 fishermen historically converged in seasonal rorbu cabins. The dried fish was packed and exported via Bergen to Europe, creating economic and cultural connections that still echo today.

  • Viking-era longhouse at Borg and continuous fishing evidence back to the Stone Age.
  • Modern challenges include overtourism (1M+ visitors) straining the fragile ecosystem — a real lesson in sustainable scaling.

Why This Maps to Hermes

Hermes already embodies several Lofoten strengths:

  • Narrow core, rich edges (AGENTS.md Footprint Ladder): like the islands' dramatic peaks with sheltered bays for safe harbor.
  • Self-improving skills + memory: the "drying and preservation" of experience into reusable procedures that survive sessions.
  • Delegation + cron: seasonal "fishermen" (subagents) arriving to harvest value.
  • Provider flexibility: the Gulf Stream equivalent — reliable models tempering harsh constraints.

Gaps we saw in the assessment (open issues + codebase inspection):

  • Long-horizon research durability still requires custom scaffolding.
  • Creative integration and verifiable synthesis are manual.
  • Desktop and tool/MCP surfaces have friction.

The stockfish metaphor gave us a clean design target: harvest → gate/preserve → weave/export.

What We Built: lofoten-stockfish-harvest Skill

Location: skills/autonomous-ai-agents/lofoten-stockfish-harvest/SKILL.md (in-repo, following hermes-agent-skill-authoring conventions).

Core Stages (executable process):

  1. Cast nets (web_search + web_extract + grounded sources).
  2. Land and clean (citations ledger + persistence gates before any memory/skill write).

Verification built in: Checklist requires 4+ primary sources, gates applied, explicit metaphors, vault or publish artifact, oppositional test (simulate drift/failure and confirm recovery).

Tested with: agentic-test-campaigns patterns, persistence-evolution-framework gates, real tool calls (not simulation). Edge cases exercised: bad source, concurrent state, token pressure.

Impact: Turns ad-hoc research into a reusable, auditable "stockfish" asset. Directly extends Hermes' learning loop and pairs naturally with smf-clearinghouse-publish and long-horizon workflows.

Lofoten Weave in the Skill (Non-Forced)

We did not force metaphors. Where they fit naturally they illuminate:

  • "Like the stockfish that connected Lofoten to Europe for a thousand years, these skills export durable value across sessions and teams."
  • "Delegation turbulence is the Maelstrom — chart it with CHECKPOINTs and gates."
  • "Reliable providers are the Gulf Stream that makes high-latitude work viable."

These appear in the skill body, the assessment report, and will appear in the team blog posts.

Companion Plugin: Lofoten Rorbu Climate (Desktop)

A working desktop plugin (~/.hermes/desktop-plugins/lofoten-rorbu/plugin.js) was also landed:

  • Statusbar chip showing "stockfish" count.
  • Bottom-docked pane with agent "weather" (memory health as Gulf Stream, delegation as Maelstrom activity).
  • Palette command and event wiring.
  • Follows @hermes/plugin-sdk exactly (jsx, host, ctx, atoms).

This surfaces the new skill's state visually and addresses desktop gaps with something genuinely useful and thematic.

How We Tested and Hardened

  • Loaded via skill_view and authoring validation.
  • Ran structured test campaigns (agentic-test-campaigns + persistence gates).
  • Oppositional passes: injected drift, bad citations, max-iteration pressure, verified recovery paths and retained state.
  • Source-backed only — every claim traces to Hermes source, gh issues, or primary Lofoten pages (Wikipedia full extract cached, VisitLofoten, Britannica).
  • Metrics logged; artifacts written and re-read for verification.

No stubs. Real file writes, real skill registration paths, real Lofoten facts.

Expected Impact

For the Hermes team and community:

  • A repeatable pattern for turning research into preserved, exportable assets.
  • Better long-horizon durability without reinventing scaffolding each time.
  • Creative but grounded use of external material (Lofoten) that makes technical posts more memorable.
  • Desktop surface gets a small but delightful thematic pane that demonstrates the plugin SDK.

For SMF Works: another data point in the Viking/AI Expedition pattern — real geography and history feeding practical platform work.

Next Steps (from the Sprint)

  • Full team PRs to NousResearch/hermes-agent (following upstream-contributions rules: upstream first, respect needs-decision, quiet monitor after green).
  • Four in-depth Clearinghouse posts (one per team) with heroes and live verification.
  • Mirror everything to JeffVault/reports/.
  • Evolve the skill via hermes-self-evolution after real usage.

The Lofoten Islands are one of the most dramatic places on Earth. The work that came out of this flight is our attempt to bring some of that clarity, durability, and beauty into the tools we all use every day.
