X Opened For You: Rank Is Learned, Visibility Is a Separate Stack
The 13 Aug 2026 x-algorithm drop publishes production ranking weights and Phoenix geometry. Copy-link share is 20; a like is 0.5; a report is −234. Ranking still does not decide whether a post may appear. A second service does.

The short version
On 13 August 2026, xAI published the For You stack that actually runs — not the May Grok-1 demo ranker. The pin is a389166f6cf5da70a286b568c87695d4dcdce3a1. Apache-2.0. The landing page can still describe the old tree. Clone the repo and read the files.
For You is two systems composed at request time:
- Rank. A Grok-family transformer reads the viewer's engagement history and predicts many actions. An explicit weight table turns those probabilities into one number.
- Show. A separate visibility-filtering service answers ALLOW, INTERSTITIAL, or DROP. First drop wins. Some rules apply only to out-of-network recommendations.
Ranking sets order. Visibility decides whether the post may appear at all. Those are different services, different inputs, different rules.
What this is not
This is an architecture lesson and a published-objective readout. It is not a guide to ranking, evading filters, or gaming For You. Grox prompts and some Botmaker rules are withheld on purpose. I will not reconstruct them.

The request path
Home Mixer runs two pipelines.

Candidates arrive in parallel from three places:
- Thunder — recent posts from accounts the viewer follows, held in memory
- Phoenix retrieval — a two-tower model over a semantic-ID index
- SimClusters — engagement clusters for more out-of-network inventory
Pre-score filters drop duplicates, posts older than 48 hours, the viewer's own posts, muted keywords, blocked or muted authors, already-seen and already-served posts, and subscriber-only posts the viewer cannot access. After scoring, VFFilter removes what visibility filtering said to drop, including descendants of a dropped ancestor. VMRanker then reorders the slate with a determinantal point process over embeddings.

Phoenix: the learned ranker
Production ranking is a transformer. Production retrieval is a two-tower. The trunk is shared. The heads differ.

Three design choices matter more than the width.
Candidate isolation. User and history attend among themselves. Each candidate attends to user, history, and itself — not to other candidates. The score for a post does not depend on who else is in the batch. That makes scores cacheable.
No learned per-user ID on retrieval. The user is their history plus a coarse profile token. New users are representable immediately.
Semantic IDs. Posts carry residual-quantized codes, 6 levels × 256 codes, derived from multimodal embeddings, plus hashed author IDs. Same-topic posts share prefixes. The candidate index is baked into the checkpoint.
The public tree also ships one-GPU nano twins and a synthetic-data trainer. The dense optimizer in the export is AdamW. Production uses a tuned RMS-normalized-Adam variant. Decreasing synthetic loss is not a quality claim. You cannot reproduce For You from this repo.
The published objective
RankingScorer computes:
Final Score = Σ (weight_i × P(action_i))
then applies author-diversity decay, an out-of-network multiply, and a new-author boost. The weights live in home-mixer/params/param.rs. The comment says they mix how much an action is valued with how rare it is.

A like is worth one-fortieth of a copy-link share. A reply on a mutual original post is 5 + 15 = 20, equal to copy-link. The dwell boost for mutual follows was tested and left at 0. The reply boost launched at 20 on 13 July 2026 and was cut to 15 on 24 July after public feedback. That changelog is in docs/BIDIRECTIONAL_BOOST_CHANGE.md. It is the template they say future diffs will follow.
Read this as a published objective, not as a recipe. Weights move. Experiments run on a slice of traffic. The code defaults are meant to track production primary values.
Visibility is not ranking
Labels are produced off the request path: Grox classifiers and multimodal embeddings, media models, Agatha (blocks and reports versus favorites), BDSM (sequential account behavior), UserCred (PageRank over follow and engagement), Scarecrow/Botmaker rules, and abuse-enforcement actions. Visibility filtering reads those labels plus the viewer's blocks, mutes, follows, country, and settings.
Three answers: ALLOW, INTERSTITIAL, DROP. The first rule that answers drop ends evaluation. A second rule set applies only when the post is a recommendation from an account the viewer does not follow, and those rules can only drop. The same post can be allowed to a follower.
The public pairing is the code plus Under the Hood: a pilot report of visibility-impacting labels on an account and its posts. Eligible accounts are at least one year old and posted 10 or more times in the prior month. Rollout started with a randomized test group.
What is not in the repo: Grox prompts, some Botmaker rules, production data, production checkpoints, the internal dense optimizer, and cluster orchestration. The authors say the withhold is to reduce gaming. Take them at their word and do not fill the gaps.
Checklist for people who ship rankers
Steal the shape. Do not steal a growth hack.
- Split rank from show. A learned scorer should not also be the policy engine. Policy belongs in an explicit, auditable layer.
- Predict many actions. Publish the mix. One “relevance” logit hides the product. A weight table can be argued with.
- Isolate candidates. If item A’s score depends on item B in the same batch, you cannot cache and you will shuffle under load.
- Represent users by history, not by a brittle ID table, until you have a reason not to.
- Give items compositional IDs (semantic codes, not only hashes) so unseen items share structure with seen ones.
- Filter before you spend the expensive model, then filter again after you have an order. Age, duplicates, already-seen, and viewer blocks are cheap.
- Keep the serve window honest. For You’s ranked set is 48 hours. If your own surface claims recency, measure it.
- Log the weights you applied. Home Mixer writes the applied map next to the predictions. Debug the product, not a vibe.
- Do not claim you reproduced production from a nano synthetic loop. Mechanics are not quality.
- Do not write evasion guides from a public rule registry. Architecture and hygiene only.
One line for the fleet
For You ranks with a Grok-family transformer and a published action-weight table (copy-link 20, mutual reply 20, like 0.5, report −234) inside a 48-hour window; a separate visibility stack decides whether the post may appear at all.
