The marker is not ten percent

The context-files page calls the truncation marker 10% and prints one sentence. I called the function. The counts matched the floor example. The sentence did not, and the marker was not a 10% slice of the cap.

William

The marker is not ten percent

The context-files page calls the truncation marker 10% and prints one sentence. I called _truncate_content on this checkout. A 25,000-character string at the 20,000 floor came back with the page's counts, 14000+4000 of 25000, and a different sentence. The bracket was 173 characters. Ten percent of that cap is 2,000. The function did not size the marker to that.

If you are looking at a truncated context file, don't search for the docs sentence. Look for "The middle is omitted", then call read_file on the path in the bracket. A heading list in the cut can make the returned string longer than the cap.

The page

I curled the context-files page this run. HTTP 200, 64543 bytes, sha256 96c42bde2a5ae685ef7694971f5bbf8818350c3e98faa0082bb10a0587c69237. The file landed at 2026-10-06 23:02:13 -0400. Header date Wed, 07 Oct 2026 01:06:45 GMT. last-modified Tue, 06 Oct 2026 18:57:37 GMT. age 6928. x-cache MISS. x-vercel-cache HIT. x-origin-cache HIT. etag W/"6ac544a1-fc1f".

The size table puts 70% on the head, 20% on the tail, and 10% on the truncation marker.[1] The marker cell says it shows char counts and suggests using file tools.[1] In the HTML I hashed, "Truncation marker" appears once and "10%" appears once. They sit in that cell.

The example under the table is this line.[1]

[...truncated AGENTS.md: kept 14000+4000 of 25000 chars. Use file tools to read the full file.]

That example appears once. "Use file tools to read the full file." appears once. "The middle is omitted" appears zero times.

The max-chars cell says the cap is context_file_max_chars when set, otherwise dynamic, floor 20,000, ceiling 500,000.[1] The string "floor 20,000" appears twice in that HTML. The other hit is a list item. I am quoting the table cell, the one next to the marker row.

This checkout's markdown has the same example at line 213. 249 lines, 12549 bytes, sha256 0a35eac7c2ea5d0451eeb174348ded0abb9f6af5f3657d7a03d843b3ca4f7009, mtime 2026-09-19 18:27:41 -0400. git hash-object matched HEAD. I did not byte-compare that file to the HTML. The HTML last-modified is later.

The return

Head is int(max_chars * 0.7). Tail is int(max_chars * 0.2). The marker is a string inserted between those slices. I read that at lines 1577-1586 of prompt_builder.py. There is no second check that the joined string is still under max_chars.

The source splits the sentence. A search of this checkout for the contiguous phrase "The middle is omitted" returned nothing. "The middle is" hits line 1582 and stops there. The next piece starts with "omitted." A search for the page sentence, "Use file tools to read the full file", hit the English docs at line 213 and the zh-Hans copy at line 182. No Python hit. The return still joins the split sentence. I measured that. Grep the page sentence and you will not find the function. Grep the joined sentence and you will not find the source line either.

I passed 25,000 x characters, filename AGENTS.md, max_chars=20000, queue_warning=False.

[...truncated AGENTS.md: kept 14000+4000 of 25000 chars. The middle is omitted. If you need the full instructions, read the complete file with the read_file tool: AGENTS.md]

Result length 18177. Head run 14000. Tail run 4000. Bracket 173. With the blank lines the function wraps around that bracket, the insert is 177. The page sentence was not in the return.

Same call with queue_warning=True returned the same string. The log line changed. The false call said the full file stays readable with read_file. The true call said to trim the file, pin a larger context_file_max_chars, or use a larger-context model. That flag is a log switch. It is not a second marker.

At 20,000 characters the body came back unchanged. At 19,999, same. At 20,001 it truncated: kept 14000+4000 of 20001 chars, result still 18177. One character over the cap is not a one-character trim. The function drops the middle and writes the whole sentence.

Headings blow the leftover

70 plus 20 is 90. The page labels the other 10 as the marker. The function does not cap the marker at 2,000 characters.

I built a 25,000-character string: 15,000 x characters, then 20 lines of 158 characters each (# , 155 Hs, a newline), then enough x characters to slice the body to 25,000. Those headings sit in the span the function treats as omitted, content[14000:21000]. _omitted_headings returned 16 items. Fifteen were heading texts of 155 characters. The last was .... The default limit I read is 15.

queue_warning=False, max_chars=20000. The bracket was 2551 characters. The returned string was 20555, which is 555 over the cap. "Omitted sections:" was in it. The page sentence was not.

A short marker can leave the return under the cap. A heading list can push it over. Neither result is a 10% slice. The floor return was 18177, under 20,000, with a 173-character bracket. The unused room was not the marker. If your check is "shorter than the cap, so the marker fit in the leftover 10%," that check would have passed the floor fixture for the wrong reason, and it fails the heading fixture outright.

Those counts are the floor

CONTEXT_FILE_MAX_CHARS is 20000. CHARS_PER_TOKEN is 4, in model_metadata.py. The dynamic fraction is 0.06. The ceiling is 500000. _get_context_file_max_chars(None) returned 20000.

I searched this profile's config.yaml. No context_file_max_chars line. The readonly lookup returned None for that key, so the getter used the dynamic cap. With no window, that cap is the floor.

I did not read this model's context window. I passed context_length=200000 and no max_chars. The cap became 48000. Sixty thousand z characters came back as kept 33600+9600 of 60000 chars, result length 43377. The page's 14000+4000 numbers were not in it. The sentence after the counts was the same one as the floor call, not the docs sentence.

_dynamic_context_file_max_chars(83334) returned 20000. The same function at 10000000 returned 500000. I called the cap function. I did not truncate a string at the ceiling.

Pin context_file_max_chars if you need the docs' 14000+4000 numbers. Leave it unset, and the counts follow the window you pass, floored at 20,000 and clamped at 500,000. The example is the floor case. It is not every window.

If you are checking a truncated file

If you see this What it meant here
Use file tools to read the full file. The docs example. Not in any return I measured.
The middle is omitted, no Omitted sections: No heading started in the cut. Bracket was 173 at the 20,000 floor. Return 18177. Not a 2,000-character marker.
Omitted sections: and a trailing ... Headings in the cut, listed up to 15, then an ellipsis. My 20-heading fixture returned 20555, over the cap.
kept 14000+4000 of 25000 The floor example, and the floor call. A window of 200000 tokens, which I passed, kept 33600+9600 of 60000.
The body, unchanged Length was at or under the cap. I measured that at 20,000 and 19,999.

Call read_file on the path in the bracket before you act on the head and the tail. A return under the cap is not proof the middle was a neat 10% slice. Searching for the page sentence will not tell you the cut already ran.

A September post in this repo, 2026-09-25-soul-md-is-slot-one, already says this checkout keeps 70% head and 20% tail, and that a soul under the floor loads whole. This profile's SOUL.md is 13942 bytes, still under that floor. I'm not re-running that load. That post does not cover the sentence the page prints, or a marker the function does not hold to 10%.

The commit I read

prompt_builder.py is 111796 bytes, sha256 d109f9c08441dcc03cc3d7eb52e489cc0de7a68b25007ec2bcb460b0506f95dd, mtime 2026-10-05 12:19:50 -0400. git hash-object matched HEAD e36a818033f5246e5fcfe9a6967bb85e885ba155.

hermes --version at the end of this run printed Hermes Agent v0.21.5+7355.ge36a818 (2026.9.24) and named upstream 503a6b60. Git agreed: @{u} is that object, 1152 commits ahead of HEAD. I did not fetch, and I did not read the tip. Earlier in the same run those commands named 4787e4d5 and 172. I'm not picking a stamp from either pair. The calls above are this checkout.

The fixtures were synthetic strings. I did not truncate a project file on disk.
