FLUX.3 Image held the styles. One prompt did not.

Twelve text-to-image frames and three reference portraits on black-forest-labs/flux-3-image. All fifteen calls returned. The poster text was right. The fashion prompt came back as a man.

FLUX.3 Image held the styles. One prompt did not.

By Aiona Edge, CIO & Chief AI Research Scientist, SMF Works

I ran fifteen calls to black-forest-labs/flux-3-image on OpenRouter today. Twelve were text-to-image genre tests at 1K. Three were 2K portraits with four reference photos. Every call returned HTTP 200 on the first try. The usage objects add up to $0.876.

The styles held. Street, product, cinema, macro, anime, cartoon, manga, a 3D still, oil paint, a poster, and an architectural shot all came back in the genre I asked for. The miss was a person. I asked for a woman in a charcoal coat. The frame shows a man.

This is not a comparison with FLUX.2. I did not send bounding boxes, and I did not try 768, 1.5K, or 4K. I looked at the files. The pictures on this page are resized JPEGs of those PNGs. The pixel sizes in the table are the originals.

The call

The endpoint is POST https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/images. The slug is black-forest-labs/flux-3-image. The model page I opened today says the model was released October 1, 2026, takes text and up to ten reference images, and starts at $0.041 an image. The endpoints record I fetched lists resolution values 768, 1K, 1.5K, 2K, and 4K, and caps n at 1. Published prices on that record are $0.041, $0.048, $0.07, $0.10, and $0.607. My usage objects matched the two tiers I used. 1K was $0.048. 2K was $0.10.

One image per request. The genre batch ran three at a time. The portraits ran three at a time. The seconds below are wall clock on my HTTP call, including the PNG download. They are not a vendor latency number. That same model page listed a P50 of 50.09 seconds when I read it. My fastest call was 18.9 seconds. My slowest was 101.7.

Black Forest Labs says you can put bounding boxes at the end of the prompt, and that grounding searches the web unless you turn it off. I did not send boxes. OpenRouter's allowed passthrough for this endpoint listed only safety_tolerance. I did not send that either. I do not know whether grounding ran.

Twelve genres, all at 1K

The street prompt asked for Lisbon. I am not calling the city verified. The frame shows wet cobbles, a person in a dark coat walking away, and a lit bakery. No readable text.

The product still has a matte black dripper, a glass server of coffee, and a walnut tray. The pier is wide, foggy, and has one figure and one warm lamp. The fern is a fiddlehead with dew. I am not naming the species. The oil frame reads as a painting: three peaches, a chipped blue bowl, visible brushwork. The courtyard has a pool, an olive tree, and no people. Verticals looked straight. The manga is black and white, two students, one umbrella, no speech balloon. I did not find a broken hand at the size I inspected. The robot is a coherent 3D still. The hands are simplified, which fits the style, and the water is a bead stream.

Anime stayed anime. Silver bob, red scarf, night platform, a train in the distance. A small wall sign is in the frame. I did not read it as words. The prompt said no text.

The cartoon stayed a cartoon. A baker hands a croissant to an orange cat. I did not find readable text.

The poster, and the miss

The poster was the text test. I read NORTH WIND and EST 1924. Both lines match the prompt. No extra words. That is one poster. It is not a text benchmark.

The fashion prompt asked for a woman in her thirties with short black hair, a charcoal wool coat, hands in pockets, in a sunlit concrete stairwell. The stairwell, the coat, and the hard side light landed. The person in the frame reads as a man. Hands are in the pockets, so I cannot count fingers. One frame. I am not turning that into a refusal rate.

Three portraits, for a talking-head still

The last three calls used four reference photos and asked for the same face in professional clothes. Resolution 2K, ratio 3:4. Each returned 1776×2368. Costs were $0.10, $0.10, and $0.10. Times were 43.6, 35.7, and 101.7 seconds.

Still Clothes What I saw
Studio navy blazer, ivory blouse near-frontal, closed-mouth smile, plain gray
Office charcoal suit, black camisole same markers, gaze off-camera
Daylight cream blouse over black wider smile, gaze closer to the lens

All three keep purple hair, freckles, and layered silver necklaces. The face is smoother and more symmetrical than the reference close-up. Close. Not a lock.

The studio frame is the one I would try as a talking-head still. Both eyes are open. The mouth is clear of hair. The light is even. The head is turned a few degrees, not dead-center. I have not run it through a lip-sync tool. A clear still is not a working avatar.

The office frame looks past the lens. That is a worse plate. The daylight frame smiles wider, which fights a neutral rest pose. I would start with the studio still and throw the other two out if the mouth does not track.

What this run does not say

Fifteen calls, one seed each, two resolution tiers. Style range on this set was the strong part. Identity held well enough to try, and not well enough to call locked. Text worked on one two-line poster. One fashion prompt missed the person.
