DSV4 Vision-Exp vs GLM-5.3-Flash-EXL3 on Dual DGX Spark
We ran both models on the same pair of NVIDIA DGX Sparks (GB10, CX7 enp1s0f0np0) on 2026-09-01. Same 5-category + vision harness. Same formal OpenAI tools path. Then we picked one live pin.
Winner for :8888: DeepSeek V4 Flash Vision-Exp. GLM EXL3 is off the cluster (weights deleted to reclaim disk). MiniMax H3 stays on 56bc; M3 is not on these nodes.
What we served
| DSV4 Vision-Exp | GLM-5.3-Flash-EXL3 R4 (c190db1) |
|
|---|---|---|
| Checkpoint | deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision-Exp @ 86f746b3 |
EXL3 4bpw + DFlash2 |
| Runtime | Anemll dspark-vllm-gx10:0.1.1, TP=2 |
vLLM EXL3 overlay, TP=2 |
| Context that booted | 1,048,576 | 540,000 (E2 overlay KV tax; 640K/1M failed) |
| Vision | Native image_url (no video) |
Native image_url |
| Thinking for tools | off | off |
| Thinking for math/reasoning | on | on |
Do not confuse this DSV4 with the parked 0731 text-only serve. Vision-Exp is a different checkpoint. Pointing DSPARK_MODEL at 0731 drops image_url.
Quality
| Suite | DSV4 Vision-Exp | GLM R4 |
|---|---|---|
| 5-category + vision (this harness) | 25/25 (100%) | 24/25 (96%) |
| 23-task behavioral (DrJ) | 22/23 (96%) | 22/23 estimated — syllogism answer_incomplete |
| Formal tool calls | 5/5 | 5/5 |
| Vision (shapes / 4-wide RGB) | 5/5, including issue #168 4-wide RGB | 5/5 |
| Simulation | 0% | 0% |
GLM R3 on an earlier overlay had scored 23/23. R4’s E2 overlay did not improve quality. It cost KV headroom and reintroduced the syllogism thinking-budget miss.
The one 5-category miss on GLM R4 was an empty syllogism answer under thinking-on — the same class of failure as R3, not a comprehension error. DSV4 Vision-Exp answered the syllogism correctly.
Speed (this kit, thinking off)
| Workload | DSV4 Vision-Exp | GLM R4 |
|---|---|---|
| Structured (count 1→80) | 78.7 tok/s (160 tok / 2.03 s) | 53.0 tok/s (162 tok / 3.06 s) |
| Prose paragraph | 28.5 tok/s (174 tok / 6.11 s) | 18.4 tok/s (163 tok / 8.84 s) |
About 1.5× in DSV4 Vision-Exp’s favor on both arms. Do not quote vendor 62.9 tok/s GLM cards or 82 tok/s old MTP DSV4 as this run.
Why Vision-Exp is the live pin
- Context that actually boots. 1M vs 540K. The GLM README 1M / util 0.87 pair OOMs this kit. R4’s E2 overlay made that worse.
- Decode. 78.7 / 28.5 vs 53 / 18.4 tok/s.
- Quality is a tie or DSV4’s. 25/25 vs 24/25 on the 5-category suite; 22/23 vs ~22/23 on the 23-task suite.
- Native vision. Confirmed: 4-wide RGB is not a black frame; red square / blue circle / green triangle all named.
GLM R3 remains the best GLM behavioral score we measured (23/23). It is not on disk anymore. If MiaAI-Lab ships an overlay that restores 640K+ without dropping quality, that is a new bake, not a rollback of these weights.
Pins that mattered
- CX7
enp1s0f0np0/rocep1s0f0both ranks (recipe examples usef1; ours is DOWN). - DSV4:
DSPARK_WORKER_HF_NFS=0(no NFS on this kit),DEFAULT_THINKING=offfor tool smoke,GPU_MEMORY_UTILIZATION_TEXT~0.80 after polkitd free-mem gate. - GLM:
CG_ESTIMATE=0or CUDA-graph KV deduction kills the bring-up. Do not take README util 0.87. - Eval: formal
toolsarray is the agent path. Conversational “please call get_weather” is not.
Hardware
