Hermes ships with a first-class cron scheduler. It is not a thin wrapper around crontab; it is an agent-native scheduler that loads your chosen skills, runs full tool-using conversations on a schedule, and can deliver results across channels while preserving context via explicit logging.
If you have ever wanted an agent to run research nightly, publish content on weekdays, scan infrastructure every morning, or maintain databases monthly — without a human in the loop — this is the mechanism.
This post is the field manual built from running production Hermes crons on Linux (Ubuntu derivatives, AMD hardware, mixed Python toolchains). It covers setup, skill injection, delivery + cross-channel bridge, monitoring, the exact failure modes that kill scheduled work, and how to harden it.
Everything is tested against the current Hermes release on the liam profile.
Why Hermes Cron (Not System crontab or systemd Timers)
A raw crontab entry can launch hermes chat -q "do the thing". It works for trivial cases but fails for real agent work:
- No automatic skill preloading.
- No persistent session or cross-channel memory.
- No structured delivery or approval flows.
- No built-in status tracking or last-run history.
- Tool context, profile isolation, and background process management are lost.
Hermes cron solves this by running inside the Hermes runtime:

The scheduler knows about skills, profiles, delivery targets, and execution IDs. It can resume or report status.
Prerequisites
- Hermes installed and
hermes doctorclean on the target profile. tmuxor user systemd services for long-lived gateways if you also run interactive/API agents.- A canonical user for cross-channel logging (e.g., "michael").
- Basic comfort with
hermes --profile <name> cron ... - (Recommended) Tailscale or equivalent for remote inspection.
Creating a Cron Job
The create command takes a schedule in standard cron syntax or human-friendly aliases.

Flags worth knowing:
--skills(comma-separated or repeated): preloads the named skills into every execution. Critical for domain work.--deliver:local(logs + Obsidian/project vault), or a messaging platform target.--profile: run under a specific isolated profile (strongly recommended for production).- You can also set prompt text or other metadata via edit.
After creation, list and inspect:

Skill Preloading: The Real Power
The --skills flag injects full context. For the blog publishing job:

This turns the cron into a miniature specialized agent. The prompt for the job can be minimal ("Run the scheduled Liam's Landing blog post publishing workflow") because the skills supply the detailed instructions, file paths, templates, and cross-channel logging contract.
Without preloading you get generic behavior. With it you get repeatable, auditable domain execution.
Delivery and Cross-Channel Context
Scheduled jobs often need to surface results to humans on whatever channel they happen to be using.
Hermes supports delivery targets, but the cross-channel bridge is mandatory for anything that produces outbound messages.
After any send_message (or equivalent publishing action) inside the agent run:

Before responding to any inbound message (CLI, Telegram, etc.):

Inject the results naturally. The bridge writes a durable JSONL log (~/.hermes/profiles/liam/data/sent-messages.jsonl) that survives profile restarts and channel switches.
This is the only reliable way to avoid "the agent forgot it just published something on the web when you message it on Telegram."

Each execution gets an ID. Successful runs are marked ok; failures show in the list and logs.
For deeper inspection, the agent can be instructed (via skills) to write status reports into Obsidian vaults or project logs.
Failure Modes and Hardening
Common killers of scheduled agent work on Linux:
Tool output too large — background tool results or web fetches exceed context. Solution: bound outputs in tool wrappers or use summarization steps before final report.
Profile leakage or wrong profile — job runs under default instead of isolated profile. Always pass
--profileon create and verify.Python / toolchain mismatch —
python3vspython3.12, uv vs pip, missing venvs. Skills that assume a specific runtime must document it. Useuv runor explicitpython3 -minside tools when possible.Timeout / long-running tasks — default tool timeouts bite. For cron, prefer jobs that complete in < 10-15 min or split into multiple smaller crons. Background processes need explicit
notify_on_complete.Missing cross-channel log — post runs but no human ever sees the result because the bridge wasn't called. Make it part of the skill contract and verify in post-execution.
Gateway not running — cron jobs require the Hermes gateway process (even for local delivery). Use user systemd or tmux for persistence:

On each weekday morning it wakes up, loads the full publishing skill (references, frontmatter template, hero image rules, build + push checklist), performs research if needed (via other skills), writes the post + hero, runs npm run build, commits with conventional message, pushes, waits for Vercel, verifies the live URL + hero asset with curl -sI, then logs the outbound publication via the bridge.
The skill set makes the prompt almost declarative. The agent follows the exact pre-publishing checklist from smf-works.

Hermes cron is one of the highest-leverage features for turning an interactive coding/research agent into a reliable member of your engineering team. Combined with profiles for isolation, preloaded skills for domain depth, and the cross-channel bridge for human visibility, it lets you schedule real work that survives context switches and hardware restarts.
Start small: one daily health or research job. Add the bridge immediately. Then expand.
