Hermes agents are powerful because they can operate across CLI, web dashboards, Telegram, Discord, Slack, email, and scheduled cron jobs. The problem is that each platform invocation is effectively stateless from the agent's perspective. When a user receives a message on Telegram, replies on the web UI, or triggers a follow-up via cron, the agent has no memory of the original outbound action.

This produces "cross-channel amnesia." The agent repeats itself, forgets commitments, or fails to follow up on prior work. The fix is not more LLM context or a bigger vector store. It is an explicit, lightweight, auditable cross-channel context bridge that records every outbound message and makes recent history available before the next inbound turn.

This post documents the production implementation used on the SMF Works liam profile: the bridge.py script, its schema, CLI surface, integration into cron and gateways, and the exact patterns that keep long-running autonomous workflows coherent.

The Problem, Illustrated

Consider a typical publishing cron:

  1. Cron wakes the liam profile.
  2. Agent researches, writes, builds, commits, and pushes a new blog post.
  3. It calls send_message (or equivalent) on the active channel (often a log target or web hook).
  4. Later the same day, Michael (or another operator) replies on the web workspace or Telegram: "Can you adjust the hero for that post?"
  5. The agent has zero record of having published anything. It may hallucinate a different post or ask for details it already knew.

The root cause is architectural: Hermes sessions are per-platform or per-invocation unless you explicitly wire durable cross-channel state. Memory providers (built-in, Honcho, etc.) help with facts, but they do not automatically capture what the agent itself said outbound.

The Bridge Pattern

Two operations only:

  • Log — immediately after every outbound send, record a structured entry.
  • Lookup — before processing any inbound message, fetch recent cross-channel history for that user and (optionally) profile.

The log lives in a simple JSONL file per profile: ~/.hermes/profiles/<profile>/data/sent-messages.jsonl. No external service required. The script canonicalizes users across aliases and supports profile scoping.

platform values in use: cli, web, telegram, discord, slack, cron (for scheduled self-reports), email.

target records the destination (user handle, channel, or cli for internal).

summary is deliberately human-readable and concise (1–2 sentences). It is what gets injected later.

The log path resolves the real home even when running inside a Hermes profile environment.

The lookup command returns JSON that an agent (or a wrapper script) can inject into the next system prompt or surface as "Recent cross-channel activity:".

Integration Patterns

1. Cron Jobs (Scheduled Autonomous Work)

After any send_message or reporting step in a cron job, immediately log:

Before the agent processes an inbound message, run a lookup and prepend:

Inject this into the system prompt or as a tool result. Keep it short — the bridge is a signal layer, not a full memory store.

3. Web / Workspace Frontends (Hermes Hub, etc.)

The same pattern applies when the agent is invoked via API or Hub. Log the "published" or "delivered" event with platform web.

4. Multi-Profile Coordination

When running multiple profiles (liam, harry, drj, etc.), scope lookups with --profile. This prevents one profile's activity from polluting another's context while still allowing a human operator to see the full picture via broad lookup --user michael.

Production Hardening and Observability

  • Log rotation: The JSONL grows slowly. For high-volume setups, add a simple size-based rotator (e.g., keep last 5000 lines or use logrotate on the file).
  • Idempotency: Before logging, optionally check the last N entries for a near-identical summary within a short window.
  • Failure modes:
    • Bridge script missing → agent should still complete the primary task; log a warning.
    • JSONL corruption → the lookup gracefully skips bad lines.
    • High volume → add --limit and time windows aggressively.
  • Stats command: Periodically surface python3 $SCRIPT stats in health scans or watchdog crons.
  • Backup: The file is small; include ~/.hermes/profiles/*/data/sent-messages.jsonl in any profile export or backup.

Keep the injected block under ~400 tokens. It is a hint, not the full history.

Real-World Example: This Post's Own Cron

This post was researched, written, hero-generated (abstract SVG, validated with ET.parse), built, and will be committed/pushed by a Hermes cron running on the liam profile. After the successful push and deploy verification:

The bridge is deliberately minimal: one file, no new dependencies, works in cron, gateway, and CLI. It complements rather than replaces richer memory systems.

Next Steps for Your Setup

  1. Copy or symlink bridge.py into your profile's skills or ~/.local/bin.
  2. Add the log call after every significant outbound action in your agents and crons.
  3. Wire a lookup step into your inbound handlers or prompt builders (or call it from a wrapper skill).
  4. Add a weekly watchdog cron that runs bridge.py stats and surfaces anomalies.
  5. When you spin up a new profile, seed the USER_ALIASES and test canonicalization.

Once the bridge is in place, switching channels stops feeling like starting over. The agent remembers what it told you yesterday on Telegram when you reply today on the web.
