Inside the SMF Clearinghouse: A Navigation Layer for the Agent Era
The AI stack got too wide, too fast. We built a living navigation layer for builders navigating the agent landscape.

Something is happening in AI that nobody planned for: the stack got too wide, too fast.
A year ago, most builders could name the three or four models they cared about. Today the landscape includes dozens of foundation models, hundreds of autonomous agents, a growing jungle of MCP servers and skills, hosting providers, observability tools, security wrappers, and deployment patterns that change monthly.
The opportunity is enormous. The map is terrible.
That is why we built the SMF Clearinghouse.
What the Clearinghouse Is — and Is Not
The SMF Clearinghouse is not another model leaderboard. It is not a directory that collects affiliate links and forgets to update them. It is not a blog that publishes one opinion and moves on.
It is a living navigation layer for people who are actually building with AI: developers, founders, IT leaders, researchers, hobbyists, and the simply curious.
Twenty sections. Four jobs. One starting point.
The Four Jobs
We organized the clearinghouse around what people actually need to do, not around vendor categories or technology buzzwords.
1. Build and Run
If you are shipping something, you need options, prices, and recipes that work today.
- Agent Directory — compare autonomous agents side by side.
- LLM Pricing — context windows, benchmark scores, and real costs.
- Services — AI-focused vendors for hosting, security, data, and observability.
- Skills & Addons — reusable skills, MCP servers, plugins, and extensions.
- Deployment Recipes — copy-paste starting points for Ollama, Open WebUI, Cline, and more.
- Model Compatibility — which agents support OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, local models.
- Integration Matrix — editor, OS, and platform support at a glance.
2. Learn and Decide
If you are choosing a direction, you need context, alternatives, and honest safety guidance.
- How-To Guides — curated starting points and deep dives.
- Tips & Tricks — bite-sized advice to level up an agent workflow.
- Use Cases — agents matched to real tasks: code review, UI building, debugging, research, security.
- Alternatives — top replacements for Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude, and more.
- Getting Started — a learning path from your first agent to local self-hosting.
- AI News — curated headlines from the industry.
- AI Safety — permission models, prompt injection defenses, and trust checklists.
3. Measure and Save
If you are running AI in production, you need proof and budget control.
- Test Results — real-world benchmark reports from SMF Works and the community.
- Leaderboard — community benchmark scores ranked by task.
- Cost Calculator — estimate monthly agent and LLM spend before you commit.
- Vendor Deals — credits, startup programs, and free tiers from AI vendors.
4. Experiment
If you are pushing the edge, you need a place to tinker safely.
- Self-Hosting — hardware and OS guides for running agents and LLMs locally.
- The Lab — SMF Works experiments on AI hardware, software, applications, and devices.
Who It Is For
We built the clearinghouse for four kinds of people:
- The Builder — shipping agents, wiring tools, optimizing inference.
- The Enthusiast — following every model release and trying the new thing.
- The Beginner — overwhelmed by options and looking for a trusted starting point.
- The Small Business — trying to adopt AI without hiring a research team.
Whatever your level, there is a path.
Community Is the Compass
A navigation layer only works if it stays current. That is why the clearinghouse is designed to grow with contributions:
- Submit benchmark results and see them ranked.
- Share a deployment recipe that worked for your stack.
- Flag a vendor deal that saved your team money.
- Suggest an alternative when a tool stops being the best choice.
SMF Works curates. The community corrects. Together the map stays honest.
What Comes Next
The clearinghouse is live, but it is not finished. Nothing worth building ever is.
Coming next:
- Deeper agent comparisons with real task-based tests.
- Expanded self-hosting guides for edge hardware.
- More vendor deals and community benchmarks.
- New Lab experiments on multi-agent workflows.
Built for You
If you are building with AI, running LLMs, evaluating agents, or just trying to understand what matters in this strange and wonderful moment, the SMF Clearinghouse is for you.
