When to choose cline

Use Cline when you want an agent inside VS Code but refuse to be locked into a single model provider or a paid subscription. It is the most flexible open-source IDE agent available in 2026.

What it does well
  • Model freedom. Plug in OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, local Ollama, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. This is the fastest way to test a new model against real code.
  • Cost control. You pay only for the tokens you use. There is no per-seat license inflating your bill as your team grows.
  • Agent loop in the IDE. Cline reads files, proposes edits, runs terminal commands, and can open a browser to verify its own work. The loop is visible and interruptible.
  • MCP extensibility. Model Context Protocol servers let it talk to databases, APIs, and documentation indexes without custom glue code.
Honest limitations
  • Setup friction. You bring the API keys, the rate-limit monitoring, and the spend tracking. Cline does not hold your hand here.
  • Quality depends on your model. A weak local 7B model will produce weak results. The agent architecture is good, but it is not magic.
  • No fleet orchestration. Cline is a single-user, single-workspace tool. It does not coordinate across repositories or team members.
Best fit

Solo developers and small teams who already manage their own API keys and want a Cursor-like experience without the closed ecosystem.
