FreemiumCloudMulti-platform
Google's multimodal AI with native access to Search, Maps, YouTube, and Workspace. Best for Google ecosystem users who want AI woven into their existing tools.
When to choose gemini
Choose Gemini if you live in Google's ecosystem. The native integration with Search, Maps, YouTube, Docs, Sheets, and Gmail is deeper than any third-party connector. For Android users, Gemini replaces Google Assistant and can control device settings, apps, and notifications.
What it does well
- Multimodal by design. Gemini processes text, images, audio, and video in a single context. Upload a screenshot of a UI bug, a PDF spec, and a voice note — Gemini reasons across all three without separate tools.
- Google ecosystem integration. Ask Gemini to summarize your unread Gmail, find a file in Drive, create a Sheet from a Doc, or check your Calendar. These are native, not plugin hacks.
- 2M token context (Pro). The largest context window of any consumer agent. Upload entire codebases, books, or multi-year document archives and query them without chunking.
- Deep Research. Compiles comprehensive reports by searching, reading, and synthesizing across dozens of sources. Competitive with Perplexity for research depth.
- Android system control. On Pixel and select Android devices, Gemini can control settings, open apps, take screenshots, and interact with on-screen content. No other consumer agent has this level of OS integration.
- Code execution. Runs Python in a sandboxed environment, generates charts, and handles data analysis without leaving the chat.
Honest limitations
- Not a coding agent. Like ChatGPT, Gemini generates code but does not edit files or integrate with git. For terminal-driven coding, use Claude Code or Aider.
- Ecosystem lock-in. The deepest features require Google Workspace, Android, or Chrome. macOS and Windows users get a web chat, not the integrated experience.
- Inconsistent quality. Gemini Flash is fast but shallow. Gemini Pro is capable but occasionally misses nuance that Claude or GPT-4o catch. The quality gap is narrowing but real.
- Privacy. Google's data practices apply. Workspace Enterprise customers get better controls, but free-tier users should assume data feeds model improvement.
Best fit
Google Workspace users, Android owners, researchers who need massive context windows, and anyone whose workflow is already spread across Google services.
