Microsoft Copilot Studio now offers the GitHub Copilot harness as a generally available option for building and running agents and workflows that handle complex, multi-step business processes.

The announcement came from the Copilot Studio Blog on August 3, 2026: the capability that had been in preview for two months is now production-ready and carries the name "GitHub Copilot harness." It brings the coding and reasoning strengths behind advanced experiences such as Copilot Cowork and the GitHub Copilot coding agent directly into Copilot Studio agents.

This matters for teams that need agents to do real work end-to-end: reading invoices and matching purchase orders, processing multi-source documents, orchestrating tools across Microsoft 365 and external systems, and recovering gracefully when steps fail.

Three harnesses, clear choices

Copilot Studio now supports three distinct harnesses. Each serves different patterns:

  • GitHub Copilot harness — Reasoning-heavy, multi-step work. Ideal for autonomous business processes.
  • Standard harness — Rule-based agents and structured conversations. Predictable behavior using topics, prompts, and defined paths.
  • Copilot chat harness — Extending Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat with enterprise knowledge. Grounded answers inside the familiar M365 experience.

The new harness does not replace the others. You choose the harness when you create a new agent. Existing standard or chat agents continue to work as before.

  • Memory and context: Built-in support for memory across turns and tasks helps agents maintain state in longer processes.

  • Improved authoring surface: The agent designer surfaces the most important controls for quick iteration. A visual workflow designer supports adding agent nodes and running evaluations. Natural language authoring (coming soon) will let makers describe goals in conversation and have the system assemble the right combination of agents and workflows.

  • Evaluation and monitoring: Dedicated Evaluate and Monitor tabs let teams create test sets, run evals, and review task history, file access, and activity after deployment.

In Microsoft’s testing, agents using the GitHub Copilot harness showed notable gains in multi-tool use, file analysis, code analysis, and knowledge quality compared to prior experiences.

How it fits the broader Microsoft AI stack

The GitHub Copilot harness is a natural extension of Microsoft’s agent platform strategy. It brings GitHub Copilot SDK-level capabilities into the low-code/no-code maker experience of Copilot Studio while remaining compatible with the Microsoft Agent Framework for developers who prefer code-first paths.

  • Microsoft Agent Framework: The same concepts (instructions, tools, skills, memory, orchestration) surface in both places.   • Microsoft Foundry: Use Foundry models, IQ retrieval layers (Web IQ, Work IQ, Fabric IQ, Foundry IQ), and hosted agents as backends or connected agents. The harness benefits from Foundry’s unified endpoints, governance, and observability.

  • M365 Copilot and Teams: Publish agents powered by the harness to internal channels or external customer experiences. Usage-based billing via Copilot Credits keeps costs aligned with actual model and runtime consumption.

  • Governance and security: Agents run in Copilot Studio’s governed sandbox. Content filters, identity, and audit trails apply. Entra ID integration and enterprise data protection carry through.

The harness complements rather than duplicates other recent releases such as Foundry’s unified model endpoints, declarative workflows in the Agent Framework, and Toolboxes/user delegation patterns. It gives makers a first-class way to consume those capabilities without writing full orchestration code.

Getting started

  1. Go to the Copilot Studio home page and create a new agent powered by the GitHub Copilot harness.
  2. On the Build tab, configure:
    • Instructions (identity, tone, scope, guardrails)
    • Knowledge sources (SharePoint, Dataverse, custom indexes, Work IQ, etc.)
    • Tools and skills
    • Model selection (choose frontier reasoning models for complex work)
    • Connected agents where appropriate
  3. Use the Preview tab for interactive testing.
  4. Create test sets in the Evaluate tab and run evals.
  5. Publish to desired channels (Teams, custom websites, M365 Copilot, etc.).
  6. Monitor activity and refine.

Billing for agents and workflows on this harness is usage-based via Copilot Credits, regardless of whether the maker has an M365 Copilot license. Maker experiences such as natural language authoring and evaluations also consume credits when using the harness.

Standard harness and Copilot chat harness agents remain fully supported for scenarios that do not require the extra reasoning power.

Practical considerations for production

  • Model choice matters: Pair the harness with capable reasoning models for planning and orchestration. Use lighter or specialized models via tool calls or connected agents where cost or latency is the priority.
  • File governance: File creation and editing happens inside Copilot Studio’s controlled environment. Review data loss prevention policies and sensitivity label handling for your tenant.
  • Cost management: Usage-based billing means you pay for what the agent actually consumes. Monitor the Monitor tab and set appropriate limits or alerts.
  • Testing rigor: Use the built-in evaluation tools. Business process evals that measure end-to-end success are more informative than single-turn accuracy for this harness.
  • Hybrid architectures: Combine Copilot Studio agents (harness-powered) with code-first Microsoft Agent Framework agents hosted in Foundry for the parts of the system that benefit from custom orchestration or direct infrastructure access.
