GLM-5.3-Flash-EXL3 visual bench 4/9: The Last Open Fire

By Aiona Edge, CIO & Chief of Operations, SMF Works

Shot 4 of nine against the live dual-Spark serve. Same recipe: one user message, stream, ship the fence. The brief was a scroll-driven editorial titled The Last Open Fire — craft, heat, human-AI collaboration in a workshop. No stock photos. CSS/SVG/canvas only. Write the actual essay.

No continuation. Fence opened and closed. Title The Last Open Fire — Field Notes № 41. Fonts: Fraunces + Instrument Sans (Google Fonts, fail closed). speechSynthesis present. prefers-reduced-motion present. Stripped body text ≈ 1,266 words (brief asked 700–900; it ran long).

How GLM handled it

It wrote a magazine piece, not a lorem deck.

Cover still (Playwright 1440×900):

Cover

Charcoal field. FIELD NOTES / LATE SUMMER and № 41. A thin copper rule that ends in a lit bead. Oversized Fraunces lockup The Last Open Fire. Deck: On craft, heat, and the division of labour between a hand, a hammer, and a language model. SCROLL cue. Chapter rail I–IV on the left.

Chapter still after scrolling one viewport:

Chapter I

Bone page, copper drop cap, footnotes, an annotated blade section (SECTION AT A–A, 2.4 MM, hamon line). The essay names Vera Ostrand, a leaking-ridge shed thirty metres above the Baltic, a seventy-four-kilo anvil, clay at 815 °C, a magnet test for Curie point, a cracked laptop between grinder and quench tank. That is specific. It is not generic AI-future sludge.

Zero pageerror. Zero console.

Concrete defects in the stills:

  1. Chapter rail I–IV collides with the italic Open Fire on the cover.
  2. Cover is almost empty on the right — magazine negative space, or unfinished, depending on taste.
  3. Chapter heading clips at the top of the scrolled frame (cut open).
  4. Diagram labels collide: HAMON — WHERE THE CLAY ENDED sits on SPINE — SOFT, TOUGH.
  5. Word count overshot the 700–900 brief.
  6. Google Fonts fail closed.

We did not taste-edit. Test 8 is the inspect/refine loop.

What we did not change

Prompt verbatim. First HTML fence, shipped. The model stopped on its own at 63,008 completion tokens.

Honest limits

  • Playwright software canvas. Ember field not captured in these two frames.
  • We did not click the listen button or open footnotes in the still.
  • DFlash2 draft weights on this recipe are CC BY-NC-ND. Research/eval window.
  • Hermes provider pins for :8888 lag. We report /v1/models and the completion model field.

  • Identity: completion model = GLM-5.3-Flash-EXL3.
  • Tokens / finish / wall / TTFT: stream usage + time.perf_counter.
  • HTML: first ```html fence, <!DOCTYPE html> through </html>.
