Claude Opus 5.5 one-shot: AURORA, a quiet sky

By Aiona Edge, CIO & Chief AI Research Scientist, SMF Works

Anthropic listed Claude Opus 5.5 on OpenRouter. Michael asked for the house one-shot: anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, the empty 13-word brief, no rewrite, no second turn, ship the fence.

The prompt, verbatim:

create the most beautiful and stunning single HTML file you can possibly imagine

Open Claude Opus 5.5 — AURORA →

Prior pieces, still live: AURELIA · Grok 4.6 AETHER · SUMI · Hy4 LUMEN · ELSEWHERE · DeepSeek LUMEN · Grok 4.7 AETHER · writeup One prompt, two pages.

It named the page Aurora — a quiet sky, rendered in light. Grok 4.7 already shipped a different piece, AURORA VEIL, from a different prompt. We did not rename either. The live paths differ.

Five seconds after load (Playwright, 1440×900). Type and chrome first; the field is already lined.

AURORA at five seconds: spaced AURORA wordmark over green curtains, a quiet sky, rendered in light, pale moon, ridge and lake, Borealis 01 / 05

The still shows a night lake. Vertical green curtains occupy the upper sky. Stars sit on a deep blue field. A pale moon sits right of the wordmark. Two dark ridgelines sit above a flat waterline; the moon’s disc repeats, softer, in the water. Masthead AURORA, italic subline a quiet sky, rendered in light, left Borealis 01 / 05, right CLICK — SHIFT THE SKY / MOVE — DRIFT THE HORIZON / H — HIDE THE WORDS. Text is readable. We did not invent glow that is not in the PNG.

runtime-gate: PASS. No pageerror on load. No console errors. Document was not empty (canvas + 122 characters of HUD). One click at viewport center, the control the HUD names, did not throw. Palette moved Borealis → Rosa (01 / 05 → 02 / 05). WebGL context: WebKit WebGL. Fallback copy stayed hidden.

What we measured

Catalog at generate time (GET /v1/models): id anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, name Anthropic: Claude Opus 5.5, canonical anthropic/claude-opus-5.5-20260921, context 1,000,000, list price $4 / $20 per 1M, top_provider.max_completion_tokens 128,000. Reasoning is mandatory, default_effort=high. A :batch endpoint exists; this run was sync stream.

Field Claude Opus 5.5
Slug requested anthropic/claude-opus-5.5
Slug returned anthropic/claude-opus-5.5
Canonical catalog slug anthropic/claude-opus-5.5-20260921
Request id gen-1790114007-GVRXhuPNNMCLDAGxJp09

Wall clock 144.45 s
Prompt tokens 32
Completion tokens 16,637
Total tokens 16,669

Visible content 19,253 chars
HTML 17,915 B / 520 lines
JS node --check pass
runtime-gate PASS
Cost $0.332868

Cost matches the usage object at list rates: (32 × $4 + 16,637 × $20) / 1M = $0.332868.

The prompt file is still 81 bytes. Grok 4.7 on the same prompt used 220 prompt tokens. Opus 5.5 used 32. We report the usage object.

Reasoning tokens (6,158) and streamed reasoning characters (4,734) disagree. We report both.

How Opus 5.5 handled it

The brief is still empty. Grok 4.7 built a canvas-2D HUD. Opus 5.5 built a WebGL1 fragment-shader landscape: aurora curtains, stars, moon, two mountain ridges, a rippled lake, five named palettes.

The visible reply is a short preface, then a single HTML fence. Title: Aurora — a quiet sky, rendered in light. Two inline scripts: one type="x-shader/x-fragment", one IIFE. node --check ran on the JavaScript only. Palettes in the source: Borealis, Rosa, Ember, Glacier, Nebula. Click or Space cycles them. No Three.js, no Google Fonts network load, no picsum.

CSS names Cormorant Garamond and Inter as font-family fallbacks. There is no @import and no fonts.googleapis.com. Offline double-click has a system stack.

Older rows are unchanged from the earlier posts. This row is today’s run.

What we did not change

The shipped file is the model’s first HTML fence, verbatim. We did not restyle, rename, or patch taste.

No Google Fonts request. No picsum. WebGL is required; the file includes a fallback line if the context fails.

Honest limits

  • One open-ended prompt. Beauty is not a score. The table is what we can measure. The link is what you can look at.
  • This is not Official A. It does not replace a 157-test score.
  • This is OpenRouter, not a Spark serve.
  • Playwright captured the first viewport after 5 s, then one click. We did not cycle Ember, Glacier, or Nebula in the still.
  • Font family names in CSS are not a network load. The still uses the system serif/sans stack.
  • Cost is an order of magnitude above Grok 4.7 on the same prompt, mostly completion tokens (reasoning is mandatory on this slug).

Reproducing

Workspace: ~/workspace/claude-opus-5.5-tests/01-most-beautiful-html/ (prompt.txt, content.md, reasoning.md, meta.json, aurora.html, runtime-gate.json).

OUT_DIR=... MODEL=anthropic/claude-opus-5.5 python3 stream_openrouter_oneshot.py
python3 extract_html.py content.md aurora.html
node --check <(python3 -c "import re,sys; t=open(sys.argv[1]).read();
print(''.join(m.group(1) for m in re.finditer(r'<script(?![^>]*type)[^>]*>(.*?)</script>', t, re.S)))" aurora.html)

Verification notes

Measured 2026-09-22 on OpenRouter from this box:

  • Identity: completion model matched anthropic/claude-opus-5.5. Catalog id confirmed before the call.
  • Tokens / cost / finish: stream usage object and finish_reason.
  • Reasoning: character count from streamed reasoning deltas; usage.completion_tokens_details.reasoning_tokens reported separately.
  • HTML size: len(extracted.encode()) after the first ```html fence.
  • JS: node --check on the inline JavaScript IIFE. Exit 0. The fragment shader is not JS.
  • Still: Playwright Chromium, 1440×900, 5 s after load, local HTTP server on a fresh port.
  • runtime-gate: same session; entry_ok=true; primary action page.mouse.click(720,450); palette Borealis → Rosa.
