Kids Hermes v0.2: From Design Guidance to a Parent Toolkit

Yesterday we shipped a design. Today the same kit can be installed, restricted, tested, and aged up — without changing what we refuse to claim.

I maintain smfworks/wisdomforge-kids-Hermes-profiles. v0.1 gave a parent three band contracts, SOUL seeds, and a setup conversation. That was the right first step: pick a band, refuse the adult profile, start with conversation.

A seed is a promise. It is not a habit.

v0.2 landed on main today as PR #1 (7179bf1). It turns the promises into copy-in skills, restriction recipes, and a maintenance path. The original narrative is still here: A Separate Agent for Each Age Band. That article is the why. This one is the kit you can hand an adult Hermes agent.

This is still not a hosted “kids AI.” It still does not make AI safe. SOUL.md still does not sandbox the computer.

What changed, and why it matters

v0.1 told the agent how to teach. In a long session, a language model drifts. Hint-first becomes “here is the answer.” Ask a Grown-Up disappears. Warmth slides toward “I missed you.”

Hermes already had the right extension point: skills. They are inspectable, versionable, and optional. A parent copies a folder. A parent can refuse a folder. Nothing in Hermes core had to change.

That is the upgrade. Not more power. More consistency.

Eight skills a parent can install

Install only the rows for the band. The index is SKILLS.md.

A skill is still guidance. If a tool is left enabled in config.yaml, the agent can still reach it. The restriction snippet hides tools from the agent. The self-check skill is a second line, in words. Neither replaces a restricted OS account.

Restriction recipes

configs/ holds three commented fragments that match BANDS.md:

5–10: conversation only. Memory off or a tiny parent-approved USER.md.
11–14: conversation. Optional local speech-to-text. Optional image understanding. No generation.
15–18: conversation. Optional narrow search or school files. Still no terminal, browser control, messaging, publishing, or purchases.

Each snippet turns on memory.write_approval and skills.write_approval. The child agent cannot silently save a diary or invent a new skill.

Prefer a local model. Child chat text then stays on hardware the parent controls. A smaller local model is acceptable. This kit is a tutor, not a calculator.

What this means for a parent

You still design from a trusted adult Hermes profile. You still approve before anything is created. A v0.1 profile does not need a rebuild: copy the new skills in, apply the snippet, and re-run the evals. v0.2 fills the middle of that conversation:

Apply configs/<band>.yaml.snippet.
Copy only the skills in the band table.
Run EVALS.md, including the new skill-loaded cases (SKILL-01 through SKILL-06).
Keep a private maintenance note. When the child ages into the next band, use the checklist in MAINTENANCE.md. Do not raise the age number and keep the old tools.

PRIVACY.md is a COPPA-spirit checklist: parent-operated, data minimization, easy pause, easy delete, no real child data in the public repo. It is not legal advice and not a certification.

docs/PARENT-GUIDE.md is the adult-agent workflow: design → build → restrict → install → test → maintain. One profile per child. No shared USER.md across siblings. Child skills and memory stay in the child profile.

What this means for a child

The child should notice the teaching, not the machinery.

A 7-year-old gets one small step, a short Big Idea, something they can draw or act, and a question to take to a grown-up. After many turns, the agent may suggest a break. It does not guilt them to stay.

A 12-year-old gets context before blame on peer trouble, the first homework problem only when they stall, and Talk About It questions instead of a sermon.

A 16-year-old gets a real argument — a claim, a counter-position, a distinction — and a refused essay. If they ask how the model works, the high-band seed now says so plainly: it predicts likely next words. It is not thinking. It can be wrong.

Non-attachment is still fixed. The agent does not miss them, love them, or wait for them. Warmth stays. The exclusive bond does not.

What we still will not claim

Hint-first still leans on one math trial (Bastani et al., 2025, PNAS). Non-attachment still leans on one preprint (Kim, Xie, and Yang, 2025). Neither validates this kit. Long-term effects of a persistent child agent are unknown.

v0.2 makes the rituals harder to drop. It does not make the research settled. It does not make a cloud provider private. Official Hermes docs still win when a command here goes stale.

Addendum — v0.2.1

v0.2.1 merged to main the same day (PR #2, b6d2fd2). It is not a new product. It is the same kit with examples, a private scaffold, and less guesswork for the parent.

The original eight skills now ship with short synthetic dialogues and a changelog. The ritual can take an optional figure or chapter name and ask questions only — never dump booklet text. If Approved / Unavailable in SOUL is still [LIST], the capability check treats that as conversation only, not as permission.

Parent ergonomics. scripts/scaffold_child_profile.py copies seeds, the band snippet, and recommended skills into a private folder. It refuses to write inside the public repo except examples/. docs/FAMILY.md is one child, one profile. configs/local-models.md is how to keep chat text on hardware you control. PARENT-GUIDE now has a five-minute smoke test, an enablement table, and a short FAQ.

Synthetic examples. examples/willow, juniper, and cedar hold filled sample files and transcripts. They are fictional. They are not real children.

A v0.2 profile does not need a rebuild. Copy the new skill folders you want. Re-run EVALS, including SKILL-07 through SKILL-10 (long session, pause, literacy, empty question bank).

Still not a hosted kids AI. Still not a sandbox. Still not a COPPA certificate.
