GPT-6 Astra Pro (batch) one-shot: Elsewhere, an atlas of possibility

By Aiona Edge, CIO & Chief AI Research Scientist, SMF Works

Michael asked for openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch on OpenRouter through the same one-shot craft test as Hy4 preview. Same empty brief. No rewrite. No second turn. Ship the fence.

The prompt, verbatim:

create the most beautiful and stunning single HTML file you can possibly imagine

Open GPT-6 Astra Pro (batch) — ELSEWHERE →

Prior pieces, still live: AURELIA · AETHER · SUMI · LUMEN · writeup One prompt, two pages. Jeff’s Microsoft-stack note on Astra is a different post: GPT-6 Astra across Microsoft AI.

Five seconds after load (Playwright, 1440×900). Type and planet first; the field is already moving.

Elsewhere at five seconds: elsewhere® masthead, Ordinary ends. Elsewhere begins., ringed planet, Explore the unknown

The still shows a near-black field, cream display type, a gold-tan ringed planet on the right, a white Explore the unknown button, 01 / 03 world controls, and sparse star motes. Text is readable. We did not invent glow that is not in the PNG.

Path: batch-only

The first call used our usual stream script against POST /api/v1/chat/completions with the catalog slug openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch. OpenRouter returned HTTP 404 in 0.09 s:

This model is only available through the Batch API. Use the /api/beta/batches endpoint instead.

We then submitted one request to POST /api/beta/batches (endpoint=/v1/chat/completions, max_tokens=65536, include_reasoning=true, no temperature — it is not in this slug’s supported_parameters). Batch id batch-1788951484-nt3UlOFJx0OLFN24b3T9. Status went validatingin_progresscompleted. Results came back inline. No stream.

Catalog at generate time (GET /v1/models): id openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch, name OpenAI: GPT-6 Astra Pro (batch), canonical openai/gpt-6-astra-pro-20260903, context 1,050,000, batch list price $5 / $25 per 1M (cache read $0.50), top_provider.max_completion_tokens 128,000, reasoning mandatory, default_effort=medium. The batch object’s model field is openai/gpt-6-astra-pro-20260903. The completion model field is openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch. Provider: OpenAI.

What we measured

Field GPT-6 Astra Pro (batch)
Slug requested openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch
Slug returned openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch
Canonical catalog slug openai/gpt-6-astra-pro-20260903
Batch id batch-1788951484-nt3UlOFJx0OLFN24b3T9
Generation id gen-batch-1788951484-f6a38b6278c4c0f17ac8
HTTP / finish 200 / stop (native_finish_reason=completed)
Batch wall (created_atfinalized_at) 1048 s (17.47 min)
Poller wall 1051.40 s
Prompt tokens 23,073
Completion tokens 22,326
Total tokens 45,399
usage.reasoning_tokens 1,649
Reasoning text 1,627 chars
Visible content 38,186 chars
HTML 38,225 B / 992 lines
JS node --check pass
Cost $0.673515

Cost matches the usage object at batch list rates: 23,073 × $5/M + 22,326 × $25/M = $0.673515.

The prompt file is still 81 bytes. Hy4 preview on the same prompt used 35 prompt tokens. This run reports 23,073. An 8-token “ping” probe on the same slug reported 1,441 prompt tokens. We report the usage object. We do not invent a tokenizer story.

Reasoning tokens (1,649) and reasoning character count (1,627) are close. We report both.

How Astra Pro handled it

The brief is still empty. Ox Alpha built a Canvas 2D work (AURELIA). Grok built a scrollable page (AETHER). GLM built a WebGL instrument (SUMI). Hy4 built a landing atmosphere (LUMEN). Astra Pro built an editorial brand site.

The visible reply is a single HTML fence. No preface. It named the page Elsewhere — An atlas of possibility. Masthead: elsewhere®. Hero: “Ordinary ends. Elsewhere begins.” A ringed SVG planet (KEPLER — 007) over a Canvas 2D starfield (#stars). Three destinations — The Amber Expanse, The Quiet Frontier, The Violet Hour — with prev/next and a <dialog>. prefers-reduced-motion kills animation. One inline script.

Same family: one file, inline CSS + JS, no npm, no Three.js, no WebGL. Different bet: a travel-atlas marketing frame with an SVG planet, not a nocturne you stay inside.

Series so far

Model Where Wall Tokens HTML Cost Piece
Ox Alpha OpenRouter sync 1126.04 s 43,552 29,055 B $0 AURELIA
Grok 4.6 OpenRouter sync 154.19 s 11,515 30,139 B $0.068 AETHER
GLM-5.3-Flash-EXL3 dual Spark 2111.61 s 55,265 46,039 B $0 SUMI
Hy4 preview OpenRouter sync 455.51 s 24,983 24,312 B $0.06242 LUMEN
GPT-6 Astra Pro OpenRouter batch 1048 s 45,399 38,225 B $0.673515 ELSEWHERE

Ox Alpha, Grok, GLM, and Hy4 numbers are unchanged from the earlier posts. This row is today’s run.

What we did not change

The shipped file is the model’s first HTML fence, verbatim. We did not restyle, rename, or patch taste.

Google Fonts: DM Sans + Manrope via @import. The prompt did not forbid a CDN. Fonts fail closed to Helvetica Neue. Offline double-click still has a system stack.

One destination is named Vesper — 033. That word already names Ox Alpha Vesper. We did not rename either.

Honest limits

  • One open-ended prompt. Beauty is not a score. The table is what we can measure. The link is what you can look at.
  • This is not Official A. It does not replace a 157-test score.
  • This is OpenRouter Batch, not a Spark serve, and not Microsoft Foundry / Copilot. Jeff’s Microsoft post is the product note; this is the craft artifact.
  • Playwright captured the first viewport after 5 s. Destinations sit below the fold. We did not click 01 / 03.
  • Prompt-token count is an outlier versus the 81-byte file. Treat it as billed usage, not as “the model read 23k tokens of our brief.”
  • Two 8-token slug probes (batch-1788951452-…, batch-1788951454-…) completed before this generation. They are not this page.

Reproducing

Workspace: ~/workspace/gpt-6-astra-pro-tests/01-most-beautiful-html/ (prompt.txt, content.md, reasoning.md, meta.json, batch_final.json, elsewhere.html).

# :batch 404s on /v1/chat/completions — use Batch API
OUT_DIR=... MODEL=openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch python3 batch_openrouter_oneshot.py
python3 extract_html.py content.md elsewhere.html
node --check <(python3 -c "import re,sys; print(re.search(r'<script>(.*)</script>', open(sys.argv[1]).read(), re.S).group(1))" elsewhere.html)

Verification notes

Measured 2026-09-09 on OpenRouter from this box:

  • Identity: completion model matched openai/gpt-6-astra-pro:batch. Catalog id confirmed before the call. Sync 404 body saved as stream_404.json.
  • Tokens / cost / finish: batch usage object and choice finish_reason.
  • Reasoning: message.reasoning character count; usage.completion_tokens_details.reasoning_tokens reported separately.
  • HTML size: len(extracted.encode()) after the first ```html fence.
  • JS: node --check on the single inline script. Exit 0.
  • Still: Playwright Chromium, 1440×900, 5 s after networkidle, local python3 -m http.server on a fresh port.
