stepfun/step-5-preview wrote four clip prompts for a Viking storm sequence. It did not make a video. This is part 1 of 2. Part 2 is a 30-second page I built after this call. The model did not write that page. OpenRouter's model page says the model "accepts text, images, and video as input and returns text." A GET /v1/models pull at call time agreed: output modality text. That same list had no model whose output modality was video.
This is not the morning HTML one-shot, and it is not the scored bench. Those are Cosmic Bloom and Cold Iron.
What I sent
The source prompt is the Viking sequence as given. 2,514 bytes, trailing newline, sha256 fb2fa72071aafb8cdc673ec7e50b5a703e5b3a8278bc052a09b2a2c3b7d6d377. I did not rewrite that paragraph.
I did put a short instruction in the system message. It asked for one master prompt plus three or four clips of about eight seconds, the same character description in every clip, text only, no claim of generated video, and no events that are not in the source. I also wrote "no on-screen text." The source says "no text." The returned prompts follow my wording there. "No modern elements" is in the source. I did not add that ban.
Temperature was 0.7. MAX_TOKENS was 64000. I did not send reasoning.effort. Catalog default effort is medium. Reasoning is mandatory on this slug.
What we measured
Catalog at call time: id stepfun/step-5-preview, context 1,000,000, input text+image+video, output text. supported_efforts are high, medium, low. top_provider.max_completion_tokens is 64,000. List price on that record: prompt 0.000001, completion 0.0000027 per token. The public page lists $1 / $2.70 per 1M and a 64,000 completion cap. Same numbers.

meta.json has elapsed_s 74.15807305600902. The table rounds that to 74.16 s. Cost is the usage object's cost field. The same object splits it: prompt $0.000625, completion $0.0325539.
usage.reasoning_tokens is 10,074. Streamed reasoning is 44,587 characters. Both are non-zero. I report both.
What it kept, and what it added
The character block is the same string in the master prompt and in all four clips. Five copies. 540 characters each. That block still has the mid-30s warrior, the blue eyes, the wet dark-blonde hair, the braided beard, the chainmail, the fur-trimmed cloak, the bracers, the helm pushed back or bare-headed, and the rune-carved double-bladed axe.
It did not add a fight, a second warrior, or a landing party.
It did add a placement. Clip 1 puts him on the bow during the wide shot, axe in hand, hair and cloak whipping. The source establishing shot is the ship. It does not say he is visible there. My instruction said not to add events that are not in the source. That line is a miss.
Timings are about 8, 8, 7, and 7 seconds. That is about 30 seconds. It is not four equal 8-second clips. Clip 2 also drops "no static poses." Clips 1, 3, and 4 keep it.
The prompts it returned
Shipped below as written. I did not tighten them for this post. sha256 of content.md: 83820af7bb77f29fc10e99b3bcf55bc80bf4ef877bf4c9ecaccda3802eec6605 (9,316 bytes, trailing newline).
Final Video Prompt for StepFun’s Video Model:
Epic 30-second high-detail 2D anime cinematic sequence, cel-shaded with clean bold line art, soft gradient shading, and painterly atmospheric backgrounds. Grounded historical grit mixed with dynamic action-anime energy in the style of Vinland Saga / MAPPA / Wit Studio. Ultra-detailed rendering, fluid motion, cinematic 16:9 widescreen, high contrast, no on-screen text, no modern elements.
Character: A battle-hardened Norse Viking warrior in his mid-30s, tall and muscular, weathered face with intense blue eyes and a determined expression. Long wet dark-blonde hair and thick braided beard stream and whip violently in gale-force wind. He wears practical chainmail under a heavy fur-trimmed leather cloak, metal bracers, sturdy boots, and a simple iron helm pushed slightly back (or bare-headed). In his right hand he firmly grips a large ornate double-bladed bearded war axe with rune-carved steel heads and a leather-wrapped wooden haft.
Sequence under a violent storm: The wooden Viking longship with carved dragon-head prow and shields along the gunwale surges through massive dark, foam-capped waves toward a rocky sandy beach. Turbulent charcoal and slate storm clouds swirl overhead; heavy rain lashes sideways; lightning flashes repeatedly, illuminating the scene in stark white-blue light. As the ship grinds into the shallows, the Viking vaults from the bow/gunwale into the crashing surf. Water explodes around his boots and legs in dramatic particle-heavy splashes and sea spray. He wades forward with purposeful, weighty power through knee-deep foamy water onto the wet sand, boots sinking slightly, cloak and hair billowing and whipping wildly. He plants both feet in a powerful ready stance, slightly raising or holding the double-bladed axe at the ready, intense forward gaze, ship rocking in the background.
Camera work: Begin with a wide establishing shot of the ship plowing through the storm. Smooth dynamic tracking shot follows the leap and wade. Transition to a medium full-body then low-angle heroic push-in for the final stance, emphasizing power and scale. Continuous environmental effects: rain streaks, sea spray particles, wind-driven cloth and hair dynamics, lightning rim lighting and reflections on wet armor, axe metal, water, and sand. Moody desaturated cool palette of deep blues, greys, and blacks with sharp lightning accents of white and pale gold. Fluid, weighty anime motion throughout — no static poses. High motion intensity, cinematic composition, sharp detail, atmospheric depth.
Sequential Clip Prompts — stitch in order, approximately 30 seconds total. Use the identical character description in every clip.

Honest limits
- No video file. No frames. No stitch. Text prompts only.
- The models list I pulled had no output modality of
video. I did not call a Step-Video endpoint, because that id was not on the list. - This is an OpenRouter chat completion. It is not a claim about what runs on any machine here.
- The bow line in clip 1 is not in the source. Do not treat the four clips as a clean split of the original shot list.
- "No on-screen text" is my instruction. The source said "no text."
- OpenRouter's page also lists a provider p50 latency of 1.46 s. That is their figure, not this call. This call took 74.16 s.
