The Request Looks Right. The Number Is Still Wrong.
We cloned Model Serving Minefield at 570c9faa on 22 Aug 2026. 124 traps. The request looks correct, the response looks correct, and the measurement is still a lie. SMF already lives in this tree: our own 98–104 are in the Hall of Fame.

The short version
On 22 August 2026 I cloned Blackwellboy/model-serving-minefield and read the tree on disk. The pin is 570c9faac4f235c3bf71734b6b2159eae3505c69 (21 Aug 2026 harvest). MIT. 433 files. The compiled registry holds 124 canonical traps. The doctor implements 19. That leaves 105 unchecked.
Every entry produced a confidently wrong measurement on a real serving path: templates, tool parsers, reasoning fields, quant kernels, containers, memory, harnesses, versioning. The request looks correct. The response looks correct. The number is still wrong, because nobody inspected what happened between the two.
SMF already lives here. Hall of Fame credits @smfworks (Nemo) for traps 98–104. That is why our Laguna serve pin on 128 GB UMA is max_num_seqs: 4, not the card's 32.
What this is not
This is an architecture lesson and an operator checklist. It is not a claim that we reproduced every number, a bill of health for a Spark, or a guide to gaming a server.
We did not independently re-run the first-party benches. Status labels stay as published. Absence from the registry is not safety. A doctor CLEAN is a statement about a handful of trap IDs.
The DeepSeek-V4-Flash model page is an abliterated community re-upload, not stock DeepSeek. Do not cite those numbers as the vendor model. Cloud GLM-5.2 is not what runs on our Sparks.
The unit under test
Minefield's three rules are the ones we already paid for in public:
- Inspect the assembled prompt, not the request.
- Name image + weights + hardware + build next to every number. A revision without a build is underspecified.
- Diff the kwarg surface both ways. What the template reads and what the API accepts are different lists.
Status is a closed vocabulary: reproduced here; contributor-measured, conditions as reported; reported by others; measured here, raw not published; under test. Do not upgrade a label because the symptom matches.
Canonical authority is traps/<category>/NN-*.md. Upstream reports (U17–U26 in this pin) never enter the 124, never enter Core, and never count toward doctor coverage.
Five numbers that change how you debug
Thinking died multi-turn (trap 04). Identical transcripts, only prior-turn reasoning varied: 0/10 versus 10/10 firing at depth 10 and at depth 20. A 15-cell stripped sweep fired 0/150. The soak that fired on 3 of 3,096 turns is consistent with the mechanism and is not a controlled measurement of it. The model read its own empty <think></think> history and stopped thinking. The symptom looks like a property of the model.
Identical weights do not score identically (trap 35). First-party NVFP4 vLLM on two GB10 nodes, MMLU n=600 greedy: pooled 3513/3600 = 97.58% item agreement. Four identical runs scored 513, 512, 516, and 514. Cited minimum detectable effect: ±1.3 points at n=600. Cross-machine pairs straddled the same-process pair. The machine is not the variable.
Tools made the bench look dumber (trap 42). HumanEval+, 164 × K=3 = 492. Agent prompt plus three tool schemas: pooled pass@1 90.85% → 71.95% (−18.90). WRONG moved from 30 to 31. TOOL_CALL went from 0 to 106. Conditional on attempting an answer: 91.71%. The model routed. The harness scored a legal exit as a wrong answer.
Qwen3.8 MTP “broke” (trap 122). Contributor-measured on one RTX 5090, vLLM 0.27.1, unsloth/Qwen3.8-27B-NVFP4. FULL CUDA-graph capture corrupted speculative verification while HTTP stayed 200. PIECEWISE restored tools 12/12 and needles 8K–196K. The same NVFP4 revision was MTP_UNSUPPORTED on one Spark image and passed a depth-1 canary on another. That is trap 09 wearing a model name.
The Spark is at P0 and still asleep (trap 124). First-party DGX Spark / GB10, status measured here, raw not published. Sustained load: 96% util, SM clock median 799 MHz (apps 2418), power 19.5 W, BF16 36.5 TFLOP/s, Ornith decode 42.73 tok/s. Complete AC removal — not a clock lock, not a reboot claim — recovered 2281 MHz, 92.5 W, 91.6 TFLOP/s, 73.92 tok/s. Firmware root cause is not proven. Scope is NVIDIA DGX Spark / GB10.
One more for the MoE crowd: raising inference top-k from 8 to 32 on an NVFP4 confirm cost −4.50 points at n=600 (McNemar p = 9.8e-05). Renormalization diluted the original top-8. More experts made it worse.
What the DSV4 page actually says
The Flash page is useful as a checklist and dangerous as a quote sheet. On that abliterated path: no chat template in the checkpoint (Python via trust_remote_code); the string "false" turns thinking on; reasoning_effort injects a hidden preamble; advertised context is 1,048,576 against a trained 65,536. MTP acceptance across 30 interleaved requests spanned 0.441 (prose) to 0.978 (tool call). The aggregate 0.680 is a traffic-mix number. Publish the mix or do not publish the headline.
The 21 Aug harvest added U17–U26 from a community 2× Spark DSV4 repo. Those stay upstream. Counting SSE deltas as tokens measured 14.7 versus 60.1 tok/s on the same request (U21). Dual-HCA on a back-to-back QSFP pair moved nccl-tests busbw 98 → 161 Gb/s (U20). Neither is a canonical trap.
Operator checklist
If you run one check, run trap 04: render a marked three-turn conversation and see whether prior reasoning survives.
Before you serve a new lane:
- Record image digest, driver, weights revision, and the actual kernel path — not the repo name.
- Send thinking kwargs as booleans, explicitly. One misspelled parameter should 400. If it 200s, every other knob is a hypothesis (trap 77).
- Confirm one tool-defined request returns a structured
tool_callsarray. - Size KV in bytes on unified memory. A
max-num-seqsvalidated at one speculative K is not safe at another. Our Laguna pin is 4 at DFlash K=15 on 128 GB UMA (trap 98, contributor-measured). - Bucket scores on extractable output. Do not treat
finish_reasonas pass/fail. Do not fold tool exits into WRONG. - If a Spark halves tok/s at P0 / high util / low watts, capture clocks and power under sustained load, then pull AC. Do not retune the engine first.
The doctor is a thinking-stack preflight. It is one stdlib file, read-only, under a minute, 19 of 124. It cannot see quant kernels, UMA, eval confounds, or trap 124. Install the Hermes skill only from the reviewed commit 8df9b802…. Do not install from mutable main.
What we will not do with this
We will not upgrade Nemo's 98–104. We will not cite unpublished raw as if we hold the receipts. We will not call a doctor CLEAN a Spark certification. We will not describe the DSV4 page as stock DeepSeek.
We will use the registry the way it is built: symptom, mechanism, check, status. That is the serving-path counterpart to offlabel, and it is already partly ours.
